An image reader includes a loading unit including a first transparent member that has a loading surface on which a document sheet is placed, a reading unit that includes light receiving elements arranged in a first direction under the first transparent member and is configured to move in a second direction parallel to the loading surface and perpendicular to the first direction and to read an image from the document sheet placed on the loading surface by repeating an operation of scanning the document sheet in the first direction with the light receiving elements while moving in the second direction, and a black reference member including a black area that is disposed in a position lower than the loading surface of the first transparent member and higher than the light receiving elements and configured to be read in acquiring black reference data for black level correction.

A sheet feeding device includes a sheet placement portion, a regulating portion, and an output portion. The regulating portion includes a first regulating portion and a second regulating portion. At least one of the first regulating portion and the second regulating portion can move in the width direction. The output portion includes a first output portion that extends from the first regulating portion toward the second regulating portion, and a second output portion that extends from the second regulating portion toward the first regulating portion. The first output portion includes a first end portion. The second output portion includes a second end portion. In a proximity state, the first end portion is located closer to the second regulating portion than the second end portion. The proximity state is a state in which a distance between the first regulating portion and the second regulating portion is at a minimum.

An image forming apparatus is provided with a document receiving portion that receives a document, and an image reader that moves between a first end position of the document receiving portion and a second end position opposite to the first end position. The image reader reads the image of the document on the document receiving portion while moving in a predetermined direction. A cable is provided having an end connected to the image reader. A cable protrusion and a regulation protrusion are configured such that, along with movement of the image reader in the predetermined direction from the first position to the second position, the cable protrusion moves a predetermined distance in the predetermined direction and contacts the regulation protrusion, and the regulation protrusion regulates a further movement of the cable in the predetermined direction.

An image reading apparatus configured to read images of both surfaces of a document is provided. The image reading apparatus may include a first image reading device configured to read an image of a first surface of a document, a second image reading device configured to read an image of a second surface of the document, and a document conveying mechanism configured to convey the document from the second image reading device to the first image reading device. The first image reading device has a first reading range, and the second image reading device has a second reading range, which is smaller than the first reading range.

An image reading apparatus having a lower unit with a controller and an upper unit rotatably attached to the lower unit to rotate about a rear end of the upper unit is provided. The upper unit includes a sheet conveyer, an upper image reader connected with the controller via a flat cable, and an external covering. A rearward-extending section of the flat cable extends rearward from the upper image reader and is drawn in an area below a part of a frame of the sheet conveyer and to a rear section of the upper unit to reach an inner surface of the external covering at the rear end of the upper unit. A widthwise-extending section of the flat cable extends from the rear end of the upper unit along the inner surface of the external covering in a direction orthogonal to reach an outlet of the upper unit.

A fixing device for fixing a toner image onto a recording paper sheet includes a heating member for heating the recording paper sheet, a pressing member for applying a pressure by forming contact with the heating member, a casing accommodating the heating member and the pressing member, and provided with an exit port for discharging the recording paper sheet, and a closing portion arranged at the exit port for keeping a temperature of the casing. The closing portion has a rotation member, and an opposed member forming a nip region together with the rotation member. A separating unit for changing at least a part of the closing portion from a closed state to an open state.

An image processing apparatus is provided. The image processing apparatus includes a lower unit, an upper unit, a joint piece to connect the upper unit with the lower unit, a flat cable, and a holder piece, which is movable with respect to one of the upper unit and the lower unit when the upper unit is moved with respect to the lower unit. The holder piece includes a first opening, a second opening, and a path connecting the first opening and the second opening to hold the flat cable therein in a curved posture. When the upper unit is vertically moved, the holder member is vertically moved with respect to the one of the upper unit and the lower unit by shifting a range of curvature in the flat cable as the flat cable is pulled out of and withdrawn in the holder member.

An image forming apparatus includes an image carrier that rotates by power generated by a driving source. A power transmission system transmits the power from the driving source to the image carrier. The power transmission system includes a coupling member to attenuate oscillation. The coupling member includes a viscous fluid, male and female fittings, and a rotating resistor. The viscous fluid provides a resistance against rotation of the image carrier. The male and female fittings are mutually fitted and rotatably supported on a rotary shaft of the image carrier penetrating through the male and female fittings in a direction in which they are mutually fitted. The rotating resistor is accommodated together with the viscous fluid in an accommodation space defined by a recess of the male fitting and a bottom inner surface of the female fitting. The rotating resistor integrally rotates with the rotary shaft.
