摘要: It is an object to provide a liquid crystal display device using a liquid crystal material exhibiting a blue phase which enables higher contrast. In the liquid crystal display device including a liquid crystal layer exhibiting a blue phase, the liquid crystal layer exhibiting a blue phase is interposed between a pixel electrode layer having an opening pattern and a common electrode layer having an opening pattern (a slit). An electric field is applied between the pixel electrode layer and the common electrode layer which have opening patterns and are provided so that a liquid crystal is interposed therebetween, whereby an oblique (oblique to a substrate) electric field is applied to the liquid crystal. Thus, liquid crystal molecules can be controlled by the electric field.

摘要: It is an object to provide a liquid crystal display device capable of displaying a moving image with high image quality by employing a time-division display system (also called a field-sequential system) with the use of a plurality of light-emitting diodes (hereinafter referred to as LEDs) as a backlight. Further, it is an object to provide a liquid crystal display device in which high image quality, full color display, or low power consumption is realized by adjustment of the peak luminance. After a liquid crystal layer is sealed between a pair of substrates, polymer stabilization treatment is performed with the use of UV irradiation from both above and below the pair of substrates at the same time, whereby the polymer included in the liquid crystal layer sandwiched between the pair of substrates is evenly distributed. Thus, a liquid crystal display device is manufactured.

摘要: A liquid crystal dripping method has a problem in that an uncured sealant increases in width at the time of attaching a pair of substrates and thus a liquid crystal material enters the sealant and unevenness occurs in the inner periphery of the sealant. A region in which reduced is the speed of diffusion of liquid crystal at the time of attaching a pair of substrates is provided between a sealant and an orientation film. Further, time for diffusing the liquid crystal and coming in contact with the sealant is made long. Accordingly, the sealant is subjected to photo-curing before the liquid crystal comes in contact with the sealant. The region in which reduced is the speed of diffusion of the liquid crystal is formed using a material for forming a vertical orientation film, a silane coupling agent, a substance having a photocatalytic function, or the like.

摘要: An object is to provide a highly reliable liquid crystal display device which includes a liquid crystal layer exhibiting a more stable blue phase. Another object is to provide a method for manufacturing a liquid crystal display device with high yield. Polymer stabilization treatment is performed as follows: a photocurable resin is added to a liquid crystal material exhibiting a blue phase, and the photocurable resin is selectively polymerized by scanning a liquid crystal layer provided between a first substrate and a second substrate with light in a certain direction. Thus, a first region where the light irradiation treatment is performed and a second region where the light irradiation treatment is not performed are formed in the liquid crystal layer. Since polymerization of the photocurable resin proceeds in the first region, the polymerization degree of the photocurable resin in the first region is higher than that in the second region.

摘要: It is an object of the present invention to suppress light leakage in a dark state which is generated by rubbing treatment. A liquid crystal material containing an ultraviolet curable liquid crystalline monomer at a concentration of more than 0 wt % and not more than 1.0 wt % is used for a liquid crystal layer, and the liquid crystal layer is irradiated with ultraviolet rays. By applying such a liquid crystal layer to a liquid crystal display device, light leakage in a dark state can be suppressed, and the black display can be improved. Therefore, a liquid crystal display device with an excellent contrast and high display quality can be obtained.

A retardation plate may be provided between the polarizing plate and the substrate. As a result, the contrast ratio can be increased.

Stacked polarizing plates are provided on the outer side of substrates of a display device which includes a first light-transmitting substrate and a second light-transmitting substrate arranged to face each other and an electroluminescence element interposed therebetween that emits light to both the first light-transmitting substrate side and the second light-transmitting substrate side. The polarizing plates facing each other are arranged in a crossed nicol state. Furthermore, among a plurality of polarizing plates arranged to face each other, a plurality of polarizing plates which are stacked on one side or the other side of the light-transmitting substrates are arranged in a parallel nicol state. As a result, a display device with a high contrast ratio can be provided.
