A zoom lens system for use in an image projecting apparatus with Kohler illumination in which an image on an object plane is enlargingly projected by the zoom lens system to an image plane apart from the object plane at a definite distance. The zoom lens system comprises a first lens group and a second lens group being disposed in this order from the image plane and both being movable along the optical axis for zooming and an aperture stop being disposed between the first and second lens groups. The aperture stop is independently moved along the optical axis so as to make the pupil position at the reduction side substantially invariable in an operation of zooming, with the result that the condition of Kohler illumination system is satisfied without changing the position of a condensing lens system.

At variable magnification from an equal magnification (1:1) state to an enlargement state, the overall lens system moves while the spacing between the two lens units is increased, and the distance between the object and the image remains constant. The object side surface of the first lens element and the image side surface of the fourth lens element are concave. Aspherical surfaces are provided on both surfaces of the first lens element and the image side surface of the third lens unit. The focal length of the first lens element and fourth lens element are suitable stipulated by a condition.

During zooming, the projection magnification is varied with the conjugate distance being maintained constant by varying the distance between the first and second lens units and the distance between the second and third lens units and by moving the entire lens system. An improved process for continuously preparing terephthalic acid by a catalytic liquid-phase oxidation which comprises recycling a part of the mother liquor of the oxidation product to the catalytic liquid-phase oxidation zone either as such or after concentration, concentrating the remainder of the mother liquor, until the amount of acetic acid in the resulting bottoms becomes not more than 5% by weight based on the weight of the residual bottoms and the amount of benzoic acid bottoms becomes not less than 15% by weight based on the weight based on the weight of the residual bottoms, contacting the bottoms in the hot and molten state with 2 to 5 times their weight of water, and rapidly cooling the bottom to a temperature of not more than 50.degree.C., separating an aqueous solution containing the catalyst from the resulting granular solid mixture and recycling the aqueous solution to the catalytic liquid-phase oxidation zone.
