Abstract:
A diagnostic system that includes a vehicle communication interface (VCI) and a diagnostic tool is provided. When the VCI and the diagnostic tool are coupled together through a wired connection, the VCI and the diagnostic tool can communicate with each other and provide power, as needed, to each other. The VCI and the diagnostic tool can also communicate with each other wirelessly when the are not directly coupled to each other. The VCI and the diagnostic tool are configured so that communication is uninterrupted when going from the wired connection to the wireless connection and vice versa.

A vehicle diagnostic data collector/analyzer compiles historical vehicle diagnostic data, including measured operating parameters from a number of different vehicles operating under a variety of normal vehicle operating conditions and vehicle component failure conditions, and performs statistical analyses on various vehicle type/operating condition combinations to establish operating parameter ranges corresponding to normal operating conditions and various failure conditions. The diagnostic data collector/analyzer also measures real-time operating parameters on specific test-subject vehicles and evaluates similarities and differences between the measured operating parameters and the established ranges, and correlates the test data with known operating conditions in order to diagnose potential failure modes of vehicle components.

Once the test has been performed and data collected, the data may be forwarded to a location outside of the diagnostic tool through a mobile broadband connection device that is inserted into the diagnostic tool through a designated port. A hand-held diagnostic tool is designed to operate and easily upgrade software applications developed for automotive diagnostics. The diagnostic tool, which communicates with a plurality of motor vehicle control units, provides application upgrades and/or modifications and/or new algorithms that are developed/adapted via remote updating. The tool comprises full diagnostic capability capable of receiving diagnostic data from a motor vehicle for storage, analysis and/or further data transfer to a remote device. The tool may further comprise wireless capability to perform data transfer operations. Remote updating is accomplished through a number of external ports on the tool that facilitate modem, Ethernet and wireless communications, including point-to-point protocol connection to the Internet.

Abstract:
A vehicle diagnostic system couples a vehicle diagnostic tool, a remote processor, and a remote display device and provides the necessary functionality for compression, transmission, decompression and display of vehicle diagnostic data. Vehicle diagnostic data is received from a vehicle onboard computer and converted into display data, which is compressed and transmitted to the remote processor. The remote processor decompresses the vehicle diagnostic display data and displays it on the remote display device.
