Abstract:
Buildup of unreacted hydrogen gas in sealed electrochemical cells has been prevented by inserting a hydrogen absorbing device into the cell before sealing. This hydrogen absorbing device is preferably a discrete shaped body, e.g., cylindrical or ring shaped, encased in an electrolyte impermeable, but hydrogen gas permeable membrane and includes a material which will react chemically with hydrogen gas, a catalyst for the hydrogen consuming reaction, and a compatible binder which maintains the reactant and catalyst in the form of a discrete shaped body which is porous to hydrogen gas.
Abstract:
An alkaline silver oxide cell having a negative electrode, an alkaline electrolyte, a positive electrode comprising divalent silver oxide housed in a positive terminal cylindrical container having an upstanding wall and a closed end, and wherein an oxidizable metal strip, such as a zinc ring, is interposed between the positive electrode and the inner upstanding wall of the container so as to achieve a cell having a unipotential discharge level on low drain conditions.
Abstract:
A hybrid battery is described. The battery comprises two different cells electrically connected in parallel, a first cell being an alkaline aluminum-air cell and the second cell being an alkaline zinc-manganese dioxide cell. The battery is particularly useful as a power source for electrically operated devices which require long periods of relatively low electrical current alternating with short periods of relatively high electrical current.
Abstract:
An alkaline silver oxide-zinc cell having a negative electrode, an alkaline electrolyte, a positive electrode comprising divalent silver oxide housed in a positive terminal container, a separator disposed between the negative electrode and the positive electrode, and wherein a discontinuous oxidizable metal, such as a zinc screen, is interposed between the positive electrode and the inner wall of the positive terminal and/or between the positive electrode and the separator so as to achieve a unipotential discharge level on low drain conditions.
Abstract:
The aluminum electrodes in alkaline aluminum galvanic cells are inhibited against corrosion while the cell is on open circuit or while the cell is being operated at very low discharge current, by an inhibitor system comprising an alkali metal citrate plus a lead compound, a tin compound, or both a lead compound and a tin compound.
