Durable press fabrics possessing the improved ability to absorb optical brighteners during laundering have been prepared. Repeated launderings with detergents which contain these optical brighteners increase the whiteness with each laundering. This quality is imparted to cotton and other cellulosic fabrics when polyvinylpyrrolidone is incorporated in a crosslinking formulation.

THIS INVENTION TO A PROCESS FOR SIZING COTTON YARNS AND FIBERS. MORE PARTICULARLY, THIS INVENTION RELATES TO A METHOD OF SIZING COTTON FIBERS PRIOR TO WEAVING BY COATING OR IMPREGNATING THE FIBERS WITH POLYMERS AND COPOLYMERS WHICH ADHERE WELL WITH THE FIBER. IN THIS METHOD, COTTON FIBERS ARE SIZED WITH PERMANENT POLYMER ADDITIVES PRIOR TO WEAVING. THE POLYMER ADDITIVE EMPLOYED IS ONE WHICH IMPROVES THE WRINKLE RECOVERY OR ABRASION RESISTANCE WHEN APPLIED TO WOVEN FABRIC. BY APPLICATION OF THE POLYMER ADDITIVE TO THE YARN, PRIOR TO WEAVING, THE POLYMER ADDITIVE SERVES THE DUAL PURPOSE OF ACTING AS A WEAVING SIZE AND IMPROVING THE WRINKLE RECOVERY OF THE FINISHED FABRIC.

This invention relates to fabric treatments by which cotton and cellulosic blended fabrics can be provided with wrinkle resistance (smooth dry performance) and color at the same time. In particular, it provides a means by which cellulosic fabrics can be dyed with basic dyestuffs. In addition to a conventional means by which the entire fabric can be dyed with a basic dye, variations are achieved in which one side of the fabric is dyed one color and the other side of the fabric is dyed a second color. The color on the reverse side can be provided by means of either basic dyes or regular cotton dyes. The technique has also been extended for the printing of fabrics.

CELLULOSIC TEXTILE YARNS ARE SIZED WITH A COMBINATION OF A PERMANENT POLYMER, A TEMPORARY POLYMER AND A CROSSLINKING AGENT PRIOR TO WEAVING. THE PERMANENT POLYMER INCLUDES POLYURETHANES, POLYACRYLATES, BUTADIENE-STYRENE COPOLYMERS, BUTADIENE-ACRYLONITRILE COPOLYMERS, AND ETHYLENE-VINYLACETATE COPOLYMERS. A TEMPORARY POLYMER IS POLYVINYL ALCOHOL. CROSSLINKING AGENTS INCLUDE DIMETHYLOL DIHYDROXY-ETHYLENUREA (DMDHEU), DIMETHYLOL METHOXYETHYLACARBAMATE, METHYLOL MELAMINE, AND DIMETHYLOL PROPYLENEUREA.
