Abstract: A water treatment system that includes cationic polyacrylamide (cPAM) and xanthan (i.e., xanthan gum) effectively treats water contaminated with microorganisms such as harmful algal blooms (HAB). The combination of cPAM and xanthan forms cohesive thread-like flocs with the microorganisms entrapped therein. The flocs are then separated from the aqueous media, thereby removing the microorganisms. The combination of cPAM and xanthan has dramatically reduced toxicity compared to cPAM alone.
