Abstract: A method of extracting lipids from wet algae, the method includes hydrolyzing a slurry comprising algae and water by adding an acidic hydrolyzing agent to yield an acidic slurry, hydrolyzing the acidic slurry by adding a basic hydrolyzing agent to yield a basic slurry, separating a liquid phase from biomass in the basic slurry, forming a precipitate within the liquid phase, and separating free fatty acids from the precipitated solid phase with the advantage of removed or reduced chlorophyll contamination of the algal lipids.
