Abstract:
A method of applying a coating onto a substrate includes providing a coating source having a plurality of color components, dynamically blending selected color components to form a plurality of coating materials of selected color, directing the coating materials to separate reservoirs, and selectively directly a coating material from one or more of the reservoirs over the substrate by one or more applicators.
Abstract:
A coating apparatus includes a first dynamic mixing system having a plurality of first coating components that are substantially free of effect pigments and a second dynamic mixing system having a plurality of second coating components having effect pigments. A first directional control device is connected to the first and second dynamic mixing systems. A plurality of reservoirs are connected to the first directional control device. A second directional control device is connected to the reservoirs. A plurality of applicators are connected to the second directional control device.
Abstract:
A coating apparatus is provided having a first dynamic mixing system including a plurality of first coating supplies having a plurality of first coating components of differing color. A bell applicator is in flow communication with the first dynamic mixing system. A particular coating apparatus of the invention includes a first conduit, a plurality of waterborne coating sources in flow communication with the first conduit and a first waterborne base material in flow communication with the first conduit. A mixer is in flow communication with the first conduit and a bell applicator is in flow communication with the first conduit downstream of the mixer. A second conduit is in flow communication with the first conduit. A plurality of waterborne effect pigment sources are in flow communication with the second conduit and a second waterborne base material is also in flow communication with the second conduit.
Abstract:
A method of applying a basecoat over an automotive substrate includes providing a plurality of waterborne primary color components and a first base material and dynamically blending at least one of the primary color components and the first base material to form a first basecoat material of a selected color. The first basecoat material is applied over the substrate by a bell applicator.
Abstract:
A method of forming a composite coating having a polychromatic effect over a substrate is provided in which a first liquid basecoat material is exposed to air having a temperature of about 50° F. to about 90° F. (10-32.5° C.), a relative humidity of about 40% to about 80% and an air vilocity of about 20 FPM to about 150 FPM (0.10-0.76 m/s) at the surface of the first basecoat material for a peroid of about 10 to about 180 seconds. A second liquid basecoat material comprising effect pigment is then applied over the set first basecoat material by a bell applicator to produce the composite coating.
