    摘要: A steering column assembly is disclosed featuring a steering column carried by a release bracket having parallel connecting walls interposed between spaced sidewalls of a mounting bracket, which is for attachment to a vehicle subassembly. Shear capsules are releasably disposed within respective rearwardly-opening primary notches on the connecting walls. The capsules are connected to the mounting bracket by being disposed in respective secondary notches on the sidewalls. The capsules shear in response to an axial shear force above a predetermined threshold value and release the connecting walls to permit the steering column to collapse.

The adjustable steering column also includes a bushing positioned between the lower jacket and the upper jacket, the bushing including a support portion extending along a length between the lower jacket and upper jacket, the support portion including a first seating area, and a roller portion positioned in the first seating area, the roller portion configured to engage at least one of an outer surface of the lower jacket and an inner surface of the upper jacket.

Furthermore, a method of forming the steering column assembly includes disposing the inner jacket into the outer jacket and disposing the sleeve between the inner and outer jackets. The method further includes inserting the liquid thermosetting composition into the outer jacket between the outer jacket and the sleeve and curing the liquid thermosetting composition to form the filler.

The first and second roller mechanisms resist a resultant force caused by a bending moment created by a transverse load applied to a distal end of the upper jacket to minimize an increase in a sliding frictional force between the bushing and the lower jacket.

    摘要: A steering column assembly includes a steering shaft rotatable about a longitudinal axis with a plurality of first plates fixedly mounted to the steering shaft. The first plates are spaced from each other to define a gap therebetween. A plurality of second plates are disposed about the steering shaft with at least one of the second plates disposed in each of the gaps. The plates abut each other for providing a frictional engagement therebetween to cause concurrent rotation of the steering shaft and the plates when a locking member is in an unlocked position. The locking member engages the second plates when in a locked position for preventing rotation of the second plates with the steering shaft and the first plates continuing to be impeded from rotating until the frictional engagement is overcome thereby allowing relative rotation of the steering shaft and the first plates relative to the second plates.

One bearing is connected to the outer jacket and the other bearing is connected to the inner jacket. A method of making the assembly includes the steps of disposing the inner jacket within the outer jacket followed by disposing the sleeves therebetween and injecting a plastic material therethrough to form bearings. The plastic material is extracted from one of the apertures in each of the jackets to provide a sliding engagement between one of the bearing and the inner jacket and another bearing and the outer jacket.

The capsule nut includes a threaded inner surface for threaded coupling to the capsule and is movable so as to apply a first clamping force to the flange of the mounting bracket between the head and the capsule nut and a keying mechanism configured to interface with the bracket keying mechanism.

    摘要: The invention provides for a collapsible steering column assembly and method for applying a varying resultant force to resist the collapse of the steering column assembly during an emergency condition. The steering column assembly includes a column jacket adapted to be releasably coupled to the frame for movement along the longitudinal axis L in the emergency condition. The column jacket includes an anvil and is supported by a support bracket. An absorbing strap secured to the supporting bracket is routed around the anvil. The absorbing strap is plastically deformed as the column jacket moves along axis L and an actuator supported by the support bracket applies a force against the absorbing strap. The actuator selectively varies the applied for as the absorbing strap is drawn over the anvil in the emergency condition to optimize the resultant force for the emergency condition.
