In a data processing system, an object is displayed on a display coupled to the data processing system. Also displayed, is a multiple-point cursor having at least first and second pointing spots. The multiple-point cursor is typically positioned by user manipulation of a pointing device, such as a mouse. In response to a user indication, such as a mouse click, a first operation is performed on the displayed object if the first pointing spot is positioned over the object during the mouse click. Similarly, a second operation is performed on the displayed object in response to a user indication while the second pointing spot of the multiple-point cursor is positioned over the object on the display. Such first and second operations may include a copy operation and a move operation.

The control points necessary for defining a graphic are displayed on an icon display screen together with a graphical icon. Information on the operation sequence for the control points is also displayed on the screen by blinking the control points. The state of the control points specified by the user is displayed in the form of animation by a control-point moving and displaying apparatus and is displayed on a graphical display screen in the form of drawing points. When a user draws a graphic, he or she can quickly and clearly tell which points at which positions of a graphic should be specified in what sequence, and the present step of the drawing process.

A graphics system comprises a graphics object table that stores, for each graphics object, its identifier and the identifiers of one or more control points defining the graphics object; a control point table that stores, for each control point, its identifier and positional data which identifies the position of the control point relative to a graphics object. The graphics object table and the control point table are updated in response to the setting of one or more control points for a new graphics object by the user. These tables are referred to in response to a movement or reshaping of a primary graphics object, and the coordinate values of the affected control points are calculated by using a coordinate calculating unit.
