An ink jet printing method having the steps of: A) providing an ink jet printer that is responsive to digital data signals; B) loading the printer with an ink jet recording element having a substrate having thereon: i) a subbing layer of a polymeric binder and a borate or a borate derivative, the borate or borate derivative being present in an amount of from up to about 3 g/m2, and the weight ratio of the polymeric binder to the borate or borate derivative is from about 0.2:1 to about 3:1; and ii) an image-receiving layer of inorganic particles and a cross-linkable polymer containing hydroxyl groups, the cross-linkable polymer being present in an amount of less than about 50 g/m2, and the weight ratio of the cross-linkable polymer to the inorganic particles is from about 5:95 to about 30:70; C) loading the printer with an inkjet ink composition; and D) printing on the image-receiving layer using the ink jet ink in response to the digital data signals.

Sheet feed apparatus including a scuff feeder for reliably transporting sheets from the bottom of a stack of sheets without marking of the sheets. The sheet transport apparatus comprises a retard device, located in contact with the lead edge, in the direction of sheet feed, of a sheet stack for preventing double feeding of sheets from the sheet stack. A scuff feed belt is located to have a run extending in the direction of sheet feed substantially above the surface of the tray and below the retard device to form a sheet separation nip with the retard device. The run of the scuff feed belt presents an area of contact with the sheet stack to carry about 50% of the weight of the sheet stack. Additionally, the scuff feed belt of the scuff feeder and the retard device respectively have a plurality of grooves oriented in the direction of sheet feed. The grooves assure adequate sheet feeding contact by the scuff feed belt and the retard device in that the lands of the grooves are far enough apart to penetrate any oil on the sheets and collect the oil in the valleys away from the traction area, yet close enough together to prevent localized high pressure points which would result in toner ruboff.

A continuous ink jet printer aqueous ink composition including pigment particles dispersed with a dispersant or self dispersing pigment particles without the need for a dispersant, and a polymer additive distinct from any dispersant used to disperse the pigment particles, wherein the polymer additive comprises a styrene-acrylic copolymer that does not substantially displace any dispersant used to disperse the pigment, present in an amount effective to stabilize the ink composition against shear induced agglomeration caused by pumping the ink composition through a continuous ink jet printing fluid system. A method of continuous ink jet printing includes A) providing a main fluid supply of a continuous inkjet printer with an aqueous ink composition of the invention; B) pumping the ink composition from the main fluid supply to a print head and ejecting a continuous stream of the ink composition from the print head which continuous stream is broken into spaced droplets; and C) in response to electrical signals received from a control mechanism, controlling the spaced droplets to select between printing droplets for marking a substrate and nonprinting droplets that are collected and returned to the main fluid supply.
