Disclosed are systems, methods, devices and kits for dispensing laundry additive materials into the drum of an automatic washing machine as that machine is used to carry out a fabric laundering operation. To bring about such dispensing of additives, a lidded housing structure is placed within the drum of an automatic washing machine, an insert, containing one or more laundry additives in each compartment, is placed within the lidded housing structure, the lid is closed and the machine is run through the several stages of its laundering cycle. Selectively actuatable puncturing element are provided to optionally open at least one compartment of the insert upon closing of the housing structure lid, thereby dispensing the contents of that opened compartment into the washing machine drum as wash additive materials and/or to open one or more compartments of the insert later in the laundering cycle to dispense contents of those compartments into the washing machine drum as rinse additive materials. The selectively actuatable puncturing element being activated by centrifugal force arising during the spin cycle of the laundering operation. In a multiple rinse cycle laundering operation, selectively actuatable puncturing element has a track and cam that allows for the dispensing of additives into the desired rinse cycle.

A system for introducing laundry additive materials to an automatic washing machine comprises a unit dose package including a first compartment containing a first laundry additive material, a second compartment containing a second laundry additive material, and optionally at least a third compartment containing a third laundry additive material, and a dispenser. The dispenser is adapted for interchangeable use with unit dose packages containing two, three or more compartments, and includes a housing structure comprising a first chamber adapted to receive the unit dose package. The housing structure is arrangeable in a first position to receive the unit dose package and a second position to secure the unit dose package in the first chamber. The dispenser further includes first compartment piercing elements adapted to open the first compartment and, if included, the third compartment; a second compartment piercing element adapted to open the second compartment; and a second chamber in fluid communication with the first chamber. The first compartment piercing elements are adapted to open the first compartment and the third compartment, if included, by arranging the housing structure from the first position to the second position, and at least the first compartment and the third compartment, if included, are adapted to then release the first laundry additive material and the third laundry additive material, if included, for gravitational flow for use in a wash cycle. The second compartment of the unit dose package is adapted to release the second laundry additive material to the second chamber during a spin cycle.

Methods for improving the processability of an active concentrate are disclosed. Specifically, an ionic liquid is incorporated into the diluting process to lower the viscosity and avoid the formation of a viscosity-increasing gel phase. Moreover, the ionic liquid may comprise an ion active capable of delivering a desired benefit, which accompanies and/or enhances the benefit provided by the active in the concentrate. The present invention also encompasses a dilution process for forming a product composition from a conventional active concentrate or an ionic liquid containing composition. The present invention further comprises compositions made by these processes.

The invention provides a method of laundering fabrics in an automatic washing machine having a drum wherein the automatic washing machine is operated so as to cause it to run through at least one wash cycle and at least one rinse cycle. Such a method comprises: (a) during the at least one wash cycle forming in the drum an aqueous washing liquor containing a detersive surfactant component and a detergent builder component, the aqueous wash liquor having pH above about 7; (b) contacting fabrics to be laundered with the aqueous wash liquor in the drum; (c) during the rinse cycle forming in the drum an aqueous rinse liquor and contacting the fabrics with the rinse liquor; (d) adding to the rinse liquor sufficient acid source to bring the pH of the rinse liquor in the range of from about 4 to about 7, preferably from about 4.5 to about 6.5. The use of this lowered pH in the rinse liquor gives a variety of cleaning benefits, and preferably fabric care benefits in combination with rinse additive, in the context of an automatic washing process. The invention also provides particular systems for application of the acid source to the rinse liquor.

Compositions comprising an ionic liquid active composed of an ion active and an ionic liquid-forming counter ion, wherein the ion active is capable of delivering a fabric treating benefit, a surface treating benefit, and/or an air treating benefit. The compositions are substantially free of added water and have a viscosity less than about 5000 mPa·s at room temperature. The compositions are easily diluted with water and/or organic solvent, without formation a gel phase during the dilution process. Various products, especially a unit dose product, made with such compositions are also disclosed.
