Abstract: A scrap collection assembly for a tape lamination head that applies a plurality of composite tape segments includes a crack-off assembly with a scrap crack-off redirect roller configured to engage one or more composite tape segments and one or more scrap portions; and a secondary crack-off roller configured to engage one or more composite tape segments and one or more scrap portions; a pivot that connects the crack-off assembly to the tape lamination head, wherein the secondary crack-off roller selectively moves about the pivot to change a direction of composite tape movement.

Abstract: A process uses predictive modeling software for selectively applying relief cuts and tension to the fibers in a 2-dimensional panel prior to shaping the panel into a 3-dimensional part. The predictive modeling software identifies areas of fiber tension in the final molded product, and relief cuts are made in those areas. The plies are loaded into grippers attached to a supporting frame and predictive modeling software is used to identify areas of fiber compression in the final molded product. Tension is applied to the identified areas of fiber compression. The panel is molded in a form and cure press, and the tension is maintained on the material while closing the mold halves. The molded part is able to conform to the final mold shape without tearing in areas of tension and without material buildup in areas of compression in the final molded part or post mold distortion.

Abstract: A tuned mass damper is designed for a machine tool head that moves in the X, Y, and Z directions and rotates around a C-axis that is coincident with the axis of an arm that supports the head. The damper comprises a pair of damper masses symmetrically arranged around the head. Each damper mass has a center of gravity which is approximately in the geometric center of the mass. A resilient mounting is provided for each of the damper masses allowing the damper masses to damp out vibration in the X and Y directions regardless of the orientation of the head.

Abstract: A gantry mounted fiber placement machine has a creel and a head with a compaction roller for applying fiber to a mold or tool. The fiber placement machine has 6 axes of motion. Abstract: A reversing fiber placement head that is capable of bidirectional fiber placement on an application surface includes a feed mechanism for delivering fiber along two feed paths that are in a V-shaped orientation relative to one another. A pressure tip assembly including a compaction roller receives fiber from the two feed paths and applies the fiber to an application surface. A shifting mechanism shifts the pressure tip assembly from a first position on the fiber placement head to a second position on the fiber placement head to move the compaction roller along a linear path relative to the fiber placement head, allowing the compaction roller to change its direction of rotation in order to apply fiber to the application surface in opposite directions.
