A method for initializing a communication link between a field device and a control unit according to a communication protocol is described. The communication protocol defines a broadcasting message with a data area. From the field device, a broadcasting message is generated and transmitted according to the communication protocol with a first datum in the data area. The first datum determines whether a communication connection is possible or not. The broadcasting message is received by the control unit and then, when the first datum determines the possibility of the communication connection, the communication connection is initialized by the control unit.

The method involves transmitting a signal in the form of a pulse along the signal conductor, receiving a reflected received signal, relaying the received signal to the control and evaluation unit. In addition to the simple verification of the presence of a leak, a change in the received signal can also be quantified by the frequency spectrum of the received signal being determined and monitoring of the level meter carried out in the frequency domain.
