Abstract: There is provided a layered combiner for manipulating optical polarization on toroid surfaces, e.g. for a head-up display applications comprising a Picture Generating Unit (“PGU”) the structure adapted to receive polarized light in p-polarization direction, from said PGU, said structure comprising a dielectric material further comprising: a first layer comprising a first wave-retarder, wherein the angle between the incidence angle and the optical axis of the wave-retarder satisfies a Brewster angle; a layer of PMLTC segments, wherein each of the segments acts as a Mangin mirror-type surface and a third layer comprising a second wave-retarder. The Mangin mirror-type surface is configured to modulate the reflection of incoming collimated light on the surface of the segment to provide a collimated wave front without toroidal aberration thereby providing an observer with an undistorted image.

Abstract: A layered structure for manipulating optical polarization for a head-up display application is provided herein. The layered structure includes: a Picture Generating Unit “PGU”, the structure adapted to receive polarized light oriented along a Transverse Magnetic “TM” polarization direction, from said PGU, said structure comprising: a first layer comprising a plano-convex lens, wherein the angle between the incidence angle and the optical axis of the plano-convex lens satisfies a Brewster angle; a first polarization manipulating layer adjoining said first layer and adapted to transform the polarization state of said polarized light; an optical partial reflective filter that is designed according to the polarization and reflectivity requirements; and a plano-concave lens, conjugated to the first plano-convex lens.

Abstract: A method of synthesizing an effective refractive index metamaterial, the method may include the steps of: a) analysing an effective index material by directing an electromagnetic plane-wave towards a surface of the metamaterial and calculating the polarization currents distribution field in the metamaterial, wherein the effective refractive index metamaterial is comprised of a plurality of layers of at least a first material having a first refractive index and at least a second material having a second refractive index; b) filtering and sampling the polarization currents distribution field according to the layers, wherein the layers comprise pre-determined parameters requirements, the parameters including at least one of: refractive indexes of the first material and the second material, effective refractive index of the layer and thickness of the layer; and c) determining a layer arrangement and thickness for the first and second materials comprising the plurality of layers.
