Polymeric basic aluminum halides having the empirical formula:Al.sub.2 (OH).sub.6-y X.sub.ywhere X is chlorine, bromine or iodine, y has a numerical value from 0.7 to 3, and whose polymer distribution as characterized by size exclusion chromatography is:(a) 100% of the polymers are found in Bands II, III and IV, and(b) Band III contains at least 25% of the polymer; are obtained by reacting aluminum metal with HX in water at a temperature of about 70.degree. C. to about 100.degree. C., where X is halogen, wherein the concentration of product in solution is about 8 to about 35 wt. %.
Abstract:
An improved method for preparing a basic aluminum hyrdoxy-chlorosulfate is disclosed comprising reacting a basic aluminum chloride with a sulfate source, i.e. H.sub.2 SO.sub.4 or aluminum sulfate, and modifying the reaction product by the addition of minor amounts of calcium containing compound and a water soluble iron salt. The product is useful in water treatment, is effective in cold water as well as low alkalinity water. A magnesium compound can be added to the composition where the calcium source contains no magnesium.

Aluminum zirconium hydroxy halide glycinate complex and a method of its preparation is disclosed having an empirical formula:Al.sub.2 (OH).sub.6-y.sup.X.sub.y ZrO(OH).sub.x Cl.sub.2-x /Neutral Amino Acidwherein x has a numerical value of 0 to 1.5, y has a numerical value of 0.7 to 3.0, X is chlorine, bromine or iodine, and whose polymer distribution as characterized by a size exclusion chromatograph is:(a) a peak height ratio of peak 4 to peak 3 of 0.5 to 1.8:1, and(b) peaks (1+2) contain less than 4% of the polymer distribution by weight.

An enhanced antiperspirant active having improved stability and a process for preparing the enhanced antiperspirant active solution are disclosed, the process comprises blending an enhanced basic aluminum chlorohydrate antiperspirant active having a peak 4 content of at least 20% (Component A) with a zirconium hydroxychloride neutral amino acid complex (component B) and a conventional basic aluminum chloride (Component C) , the order of addition not being critical; wherein at least 10% by weight of the total aluminum being derived from Component A and about 90% to 10% of the aluminum being derived from Component C; thereby forming a stable antiperspirant active solution of enhanced efficacy, the overall concentration of reactants in solution being about 38% to 55% by weight.
