A separator for a vacuum cleaner has a cover part from which webs are projecting which are positioned along the circumference of the cover part at a spacing one behind the other with formation of through openings. At least some of the webs are without connection with each other at the end that is facing away from the cover part. The webs are elastically yielding transversely to the longitudinal direction. The webs are positioned in their mounting position with radial pretension on a spider which is fixedly seated on the motor shaft of the vacuum cleaner. Due to centrifugal forces occurring in operation of the vacuum cleaner as a result of the high rotary speed of the motor shaft, the webs of the separator are positioned with their free ends under high force on the spider. The separator is thus reliably entrained by the spider by friction.

A separator for use in connection with a liquid bath type vacuum cleaner system. The separator includes an annular, cup-like housing adapted to rotate axially about its vertical axis for generating a centrifugal force to be applied to intake air therein; a plurality of slots on the housing for allowing dust and dirt particulates entrained in the intake air and liquid particulates from a liquid bath to be drawn into an interior area of the housing and coalesce therein, whereby the coalesced particulates will be subjected to centrifugal force and will thereby be separated from the intake air; and a plurality of exhaust slots for allowing the coalesced particulates to be forcibly expelled from the interior area of the housing as they are forced radially outwards by the centrifugal force towards and through the exhaust slots by rapid, axial rotation of the housing.In one preferred embodiment a plurality of elongated slots in the housing provides both an intake and an exhaust function. In other preferred embodiments the intake slots and the exhaust slots are disposed on various portions of the housing to alter the separating characteristics of the separator.The preferred embodiments each further incorporate a removable spider for providing further structural support to the separator, and for further helping to generate centrifugal force within each separator.

A motor-driven blower, particularly suited for carpet cleaners and other wet vacuuming appliances, includes a rotating separator cup to impede water droplets and foam from being drawn into the blower. The separator cup is removably connected to a spider bracket that is mounted more permanently to one end of the motor shaft. Since the separator cup is not directly connected to the motor shaft, the cup can be removed without disturbing the rest of the blower. Thus, the blower can be run either with or without the separator cup. Moreover, by not attaching the separator cup directly to the motor shaft, the shaft can be made shorter to minimize vibration and noise at high rpm's.

An air and water hub for the separation of excess water from air is constructed at the top of a canister assembly that is used for the induction of air, dust and water. The hub is a spinning member rotating within the canister assembly near the top thereof, and is powered by a shaft connecting the hub to the vacuum motor at the top of the assembly. The hub spins within the circumference of the top of the canister, and the rotating action removes the water from air by forcing it against the inside walls of the assembly. A gap between the inner wall and the hub allows the water to drain downward along the inside of the assembly. The hub may be used with ah hourglass-shaped induction assembly that directs the flow of air, water and dust to the hub from below.
