The invention provides for a series of five related three-dimensional mechanical puzzle devices comprising of a real or imaginary spherical support element and a plurality of moveable interlocking shapes which can be manipulated around any of a number of distinct axes to assume a very high number of configurations.The external appearance of the devices are keyed so that the unique identity of each external segment can be determined and related to the global reference frame thus realising a series of puzzles which can be regarded as solved if the segments are positioned in a desirable rather than a undesirable configuration.The realisation of said devices via an electronic simulation.

The IKOS holistic game of this invention comprises a semi-regular geometric solid of 32 faces. 12 faces are regular pentagons interfaced to 20 equilateral triangles. The polyhedron also comprises 60 equal upstand edges each one of which subtends 36 degrees at the centroid of the polyhedron. It also comprises 30 equal vertices at which four edges and four faces meet. The surface elements 1 of the IKOS are of seven distinct colors, with each surface element being of one color only. There are six sets of like colored surface elements with two pentagons and ten up-stands in each set. All the triangular panels are in the seventh, neutral, shade. Also included is a method of designing the 32'dron on a CAD system.

The puzzle includes an upper torso, a lower torso, and five appendages spaced around a periphery of the upper and lower torsos. The puzzle is configured to resemble a humanoid figure, with each of the appendages configured to resemble a humanoid type appendage, such as an arm, a leg, or a head. The upper and lower torsos are rotatably connected so that they may rotate relative to each other about a central, longitudinally-extending axis. The appendages are mounted to the torsos so that they may rotate about a central axis that is perpendicular to the first axis and intersects the first axis. The upper torso is configured to carry three of the appendages when it is rotated and a lower torso is configured to carry two of the appendages when it is rotated.

A geometric device or puzzle in the form of a great dodecahedron is provided having a plurality of surface elements movable, without disassembly, about the surface of the puzzle. The puzzle can be visualized as being made up of twelve regular pentagons each with a five-pointed star pyramid centered thereon, with each of the five arms of the star pyramids being independently mounted and belonging to yet another star pyramid. The entire surface of the puzzle is made up of these independently mounted star arms. The arms are mounted on the body to permit rotation about the center axis of symmetry of each pentagon so that rotation of the star pyramids about their respective axes of symmetry causes permutations of the star arms. By suitable rotation of the various star pyramids, many permutations of the star arm elements over the entire surfaces of the puzzle may be effected and the individual star arms can be moved about the entire surface of the puzzle without disassembly.

An educational entertainment device includes at least one cube formed from (a) a regular tetrahedron and (b) four 1/8th sections of a regular octahedron wherein the faces of the tetrahedron and the faces of the octahedron are all congruent. The 1/8th sections are formed by slicing the octahedron through three orthogonal planes, each slicing plane passing through four vertices of the octahedron, each 1/8th section being defined by (a) one octahedron face and (b) three mutually orthogonal corner faces. By coupling the octahedron face of each of the four 1/8th sections to a corresponding one of the tetrahedron faces in edge-to-edge fashion, one cube is formed. Each side of the cube includes two corner faces, one from each of two 1/8th sections. By rotating a 1/8th section about an axis perpendicular to the plane interfacing the 1/8th section and the tetrahedron, the two corner faces forming a cube side can be altered. A plurality of n.sup.3, e.g. eight, cubes can form a block of cubes, in an n.times.n.times.n arrangement of cubes. Indicia may be applied to the corner faces of the cubes so that each face of the block has prescribed indicia thereon when (a) all of the 1/8th sections on each cube are rotated in a prescribed fashion and (b) the cubes are arranged relative to each other in a predefined manner. The block, in addition to entertainment use, can be used to show seven planes in space and the nature of the tetrahedron and octahedron as basic structures.

Three planar sections are parallel to the faces of a cube inscribed in said sphere, and the remaining planar sections are perpendicular to the diagonals of said cube. The visible segments comprise eight arcuate equilateral triangles and twenty-four arcuate right triangular triangles. As a novelty, this invention integrates an interlocking mechanism of the arcuate right triangular outer segments to a spherical center support with four axes of rotation, with a slidable spring activated interlocking mechanism of the arcuate equilateral triangular outer segments to their side neighbors.
