An injection molding apparatus having a nozzle which includes a first nozzle body segment, a second nozzle body segment, and a thermal barrier coupled between the nozzle body segments. The first nozzle body segment, the thermal barrier, and the second nozzle body segment define a melt channel through the nozzle for delivering a melt stream from a manifold channel of a manifold to a mold cavity. The thermal barrier substantially limits the heat flow from one nozzle body segment to the other, to thereby control the heat distribution along the melt channel.

The two-piece nozzles include an inner and an outer insert portions, and the three-piece nozzles include an inner insert, an outer insert and a retaining thermal ring portions. The nozzles in accordance with the embodiments of the present invention include one, or more novel feature and which include: an extended thermo-barrier, a thermo-barrier access gap, threaded engagements between the nozzle pieces and/or between the nozzle and the nozzle housing, as well as structure elements that enable an improved methods for the removal and/or replacement of the nozzles from their housing. In addition, different performance conditions are encouraged in the nozzle designs by use of different or same thermal conductivity and/or hardness type materials. For example, materials may be selected such that the individual nozzle pieces are all made of the same material, different materials or combinations thereof.

This invention provides an improved heating apparatus for controlling the temperatures of the resin melt that is pressure fed to a molding cavity comprising a heating jacket 30 comprising the concentric tubular elements; a copper sheath 32 having an inside surface 34 and an outer surface 36, a retainer sleeve 40 and coiled heating element 42 sandwiched between the sheath 32 and the retainer sleeve 40. The inside surface of the sheath 32 is formed with at least one circumferential groove 38 which provides an insulating air gap so that a lesser amount of heat is conducted to the central portion of the heating jacket 30 thereby creating three distinct temperature zones. The outer surface 23 of the nozzle 22 is provided with a longitudinal groove 46 extending down its outside surface between the sheath 32 and the nozzle housing 22 for the hot runner conduit 24. A thermocouple sensor cable 52 is received in the longitudinal groove so that the thermocouple sensor 50 is strategically positioned adjacent the gate well section 28 to maintain the temperature of the resin melt entering the cavity.

The sealing component includes an opening through which the molding material channel extends. The sealing component is received in a bore in the second hot runner component such that a portion of the sealing component projects beyond the second hot runner component to create a gap between the first hot runner component and the second hot runner component. The sealing component has a hardness that is greater than a hardness of the second hot runner component and less than a hardness of the first hot runner component. Further, the sealing component has a coefficient of thermal expansion that is proximate to a coefficient of thermal expansion of the second hot runner component.

A resistor is housed in the channel-like seat. The distance between the longitudinal free edges is such that, when the nozzle unit is heated by the supply of electrical current through the resistor, the diffuser is free to expand thermally by extending in the circumferential direction around the nozzle without moving radially away from the outer surface of the nozzle core.
