摘要:
A carriage supporting a roller platen frame is manually moved in a printing stroke and in a return stroke over type wheels on a printing bed. A releasing lever, resiliently connected with the roller platen frame, shifts the same between a printing position and an inoperative position when engaged and displaced by fixed actuating blocks during the carriage movements. A biased holding lever arrests the roller platen frame in either position. The resilient connection between the releasing lever and the roller platen frame, preferably including abutting slide faces, permits movement of the yielding releasing lever over the actuating blocks after the frame has been placed in the printing position or the inoperative position.

A POWER OPERATED DATA RECORDER IN WHICH A HINGED REAR SECTION SERVES AS A BED OF THE MACHINE AGAINST WHICH A ROLLER PLATEN IS DESIGNED TO ACT. A VARIABLE DATA PRINTING UNIT IS PROVIDED IN THE MOVABLE BED OF THE MACHINE AND INCLUDES A PLURALITY OF PRINT WHEELS, SETTABLE BY MANUALLY ACTUATED INDEXING WHEELS, FOR IMPRINTING VARIABLE DATA ON THE FORM. THE DATA RECORDER ALSO INCLUDES LOCK-OUT MEANS TO PREVENT CLOSING OF THE MOVABLE BED, OR MOVEMENT OF THE ROLLER PLATEN THROUGH A PRINTING STROKE, IN THOSE INSTANCES WHERE THE VARIABLE DATA PRINT WHEELS HAVE NOT BEEN REPOSITIONED FROM AN IMMEDIATELY PRECEDING PRINTING OPERATION. MOVEMENT OF ONLY A SINGLE PRINT WHEEL IS EFFECTIVE TO RELEASE THE LOCKING MEANS TO THEREBY PERMIT OPERATION OF THE MACHINE.

A roller cylinder support assembly consisting of an outboard low friction bearing housing which is nested in an inboard recessed thrust washer and a shaft of appropriate dimensions for supporting the same extending axially through the roller cylinder, the roller cylinder bracket yoke of the actuating handle contacting the roller cylinder shaft between the roller cylinder and the thrust washer.

Imprinting of forms with fixed and variable data from printing elements comprising two distinct groups of characters. A bed retains the printing elements and the form, and a roller platen moves from a home position in a first path across the form to an actuated position and back to home position in a second path across the form to perform a printing cycle. The roller platen is shiftable between the first and the second path such that as the platen is moved in the first path it is operative to imprint a single line only of one group of characters, and as it is moved in the opposite direction in the second path it is operative to imprint a single line only of the other group of characters, to thereby compensate for imprinting pressure as a result of rolling line contact of the platen with only a single line of characters without the platen reaching any adjacent line of characters.

An imprinting device is disclosed wherein the imprinter roller assembly is loosely connected to the assembly carriage, the imprinter roller being supported at each end thereof by a roller cluster. Each roller cluster is supported by a flexible metal band, the band being fixedly connected at one end of the imprinter and adjustable connected at the other end thereof, each band being confined at the top and bottom thereof by suitable tracks disposed along the imprinter length. Each band passes over and around one of the rollers of its associated roller cluster and then around and under the other roller of its associated cluster. The corresponding rollers of each cluster are connected together by appropriate means. The points where the bands are fixedly connected to one end of the imprinter are disposed immediately above the print bed level, this end of the imprinter corresponding to the start position of the imprinter head. The print bed is provided with a recess, the depth of which is slightly greater than the card body thickness, this recess receiving the printing plate or card prior to the imprinting operation. A document or invoice is placed over the printing plate and onto the print bed. The document is held in place during the imprinting operation by the bands which are drawn over the invoice as the imprinting operation takes place. Thus, no movement of the document occurs during imprinting. The imprinting head is then returned to its initial position, a second imprinting operation occurring during this return stroke. The document remains securely in place with respect to the position in which it was held during the first imprinting stroke since the bands are withdrawn as the second imprinting operation occurs. With the head returned to its initial position, the document and printing plate can be removed.
