The method includes operating the tyre monitoring device in a first mode, in the first mode the tyre monitoring device is only responsive to an initialisation instruction received over the wireless communication interface from the second device; receiving an initialisation instruction over the wireless communication interface while operating in the first mode; and, responsive to the initialisation instruction, operating the tyre monitoring device in a second mode in which the tyre monitoring device is responsive to instructions received over the wireless communication interface. The first mode draws lower power than the second mode so power draw prior to initialisation, for example while storage awaiting use, is reduced.

The tire pressure monitoring device has a storage module, a receiver module and a control module. The tire pressure monitoring device retrieves a protocol by external indication or internal discrimination. The external indication is that the control module retrieves a protocol from the storage module according to an external signal, and then the control module compares the retrieved protocol with a protocol of a tire pressure signal received by the receiver module. If a comparison of the protocols matches, the tire pressure monitoring device decodes the tire pressure signal. The internal discrimination is that the control module compares different protocols stored in the storage module with a protocol of the tire pressure signal. If a comparison of the protocols matches, the tire pressure monitoring device decodes the tire pressure signal.

The first data transmission and the second data transmission are compared and at least one changing portion of the data transmission is identified based upon the comparison. Sensed data is received from a tire pressure sensor. A data resolution is determined and a third data transmission formed. A method of programming a tire pressure monitor sensor utilizes a programming tool that transmits LF data frames to the TPMS sensor that includes a cyclic redundancy check (CRC) code with each data frame. The starting point for the subsequent data frame will then start with the CRC code received from the previous frame and will end with a new CRC code. Accordingly, the CRC code received from the previous frame will be used to ensure that the next data frame matches that CRC code as the starting point for that frame. This will ensure that the data frames cannot get out of sequence and will allow the ability to quickly identify where the data frames have gone out of sync and allow the programming tool to quickly react.

The device measures the tire air pressure present in the pneumatic tire or a change of the tire pressure. An electrical circuit controls the tire pressure monitoring device. A memory stores a program for the electrical circuit. A first transmitter operates in a first frequency range for transmitting data out of the tire pressure monitoring device to a first receiver located outside the tire pressure monitoring device. In the memory initially a basic version of the program is stored, out of which multiple different versions of the program for multiple vehicle types can be developed. Subsequently, a fitting full version for a selected vehicle type is created in that program parameters intended for the selected vehicle type are subsequently stored in the memory of the tire pressure monitoring device.

In a first aspect, the present invention provides a method of integrating one or more tire pressure monitoring sensors with a tire pressure monitoring system of a vehicle. The method includes utilizing a configuration tool to cause a tire pressure monitoring sensor to generate a signal including an identifier. The method further includes recording the identifier on a memory device of the configuration tool. The method also includes transmitting the recorded identifier from the tool to a memory device of a vehicle.

A tire pressure monitoring system includes a plurality of tire pressure monitoring sensors including low frequency wireless receivers and high frequency wireless transmitters. The system further includes a plurality of low frequency transmitters each being disposed proximate one of the plurality of tire pressure monitoring sensors. The system further includes a control module in communication with the plurality of tire pressure monitoring sensors through the plurality of low frequency transmitters. In a first phase of operation the control module causes the low frequency transmitters to transmit low frequency wireless signals to the tire pressure monitoring sensors causing the tire pressure monitoring sensors to transmit data to the control module at a rate. In a second phase or operation the tire pressure monitoring sensors transmit data to the control module at a second rate.
