A disc brake for a bicycle includes a casing having a recess and a through hole defined therein. The through hole communicates with the recess. A rotating block having to cams is received in the through hole of the casing and has a shaft partially extending through the casing. A press block is received in the through hole of the casing and has one side abutting the rotating block. A push rod is mounted between the rotating block and the press block. One of two brake pads is attached to one side of the recess of the casing and the other is aligned with and attached to the facing side of the press block. The two brake pads face each other. The two brake pads clamp a disc that is mounted on a wheel of a bicycle when the shaft of the rotating block is rotated by the lever.

A bicycle brake includes a fixed member (e.g., a hub axle) having a fixed member axis, a hub drum rotatably supported around the fixed member, and a fixed case nonrotatably fixed relative to the fixed member. The braking mechanism includes a brake member, a brake operating element disposed radially inwardly of the brake member for pushing the brake member radially outwardly, and a cam member disposed radially inwardly of the brake operating element and coupled to the fixed case. The cam member is shaped so that the brake operating element moves radially outwardly in response to relative rotation between the cam member and the brake operating element, and the cam member defines a cam member space radially inwardly of the cam member. A rotating case is coupled to the hub drum for rotating integrally with the hub drum. The rotating case has a contact surface disposed radially outwardly of the brake member for contacting the brake member when the brake member moves radially outwardly. To reduce the axial length of the bicycle brake, a portion of the hub shell is disposed within the cam member space. Alternatively, an attachment mechanism may be used for coupling the rotating case to the hub shell, wherein a portion of the attachment mechanism is disposed within the cam member space.

A hub transmission with a coaster brake unit includes a hub axle, a drive member rotatably mounted around the hub axle, a hub body rotatably mounted around the hub axle, and a planetary gear mechanism coupled between the drive member and the hub body for communicating rotational force from the drive member to the hub body through multiple rotational force transmission paths. The planetary gear mechanism includes a planet gear supported by a planet gear rack for rotation around the hub axle, and a ring gear engaging the planet gear. The gear rack includes a depression formed in a peripheral direction thereof, and the ring gear includes a serration formed in a peripheral direction thereof. A clutch having an engagement component is movable in a direction of an axis of the axle between a first position, a standby position and a second position. The engagement component engages with the depression in the gear rack for transmitting rotational power to the gear rack when the clutch is located in the first position and the standby position, and the engagement component engages with the serration in the ring gear for transmitting rotational power to the ring gear when the clutch is located in the second position. A biasing mechanism biases the clutch from the second position toward the standby position, and a forcible movement mechanism forcibly moves the clutch from the standby position toward the second position when forward rotational power is applied to the drive member.

A hub brake apparatus for use on an axle fixed to a frame of a bicycle. The apparatus includes a hub rotatable in a first direction about the axle when the bicycle moves forward, a brake drum rotatable with the hub, brake shoes arranged around the axle and radially inwardly of the brake drum to be movable between a first position for frictionally engaging the brake drum and a second position retracted from the brake drum, a ring spring for biasing the brake shoes toward the second position, and a cam mechanism disposed radially inwardly of the brake shoes for moving the brake shoes from the second position to the first position. The cam mechanism includes intermediate members having radially outward portions for contacting the brake shoes, and a cam disposed radially inwardly of the intermediate members and having peripheral portions for contacting the intermediate members. The peripheral portions of the cam define inclined surfaces opposed to the intermediate members. Each of the inclined surfaces has a radius from the axle diminishing in the first direction. The inclined surfaces displace the intermediate members radially outwardly into pressure contact with the brake shoes when the cam is manually rotated in the first direction.
