摘要: Disclosed are a method of making CO.sub.2 snow by injecting liquefied CO.sub.2 into a snow horn from the ceiling of the snow horn having an opening at the lower end to effect adiabatic expansion and an apparatus therefor. Liquefied CO.sub.2 is injected radially outward so that it may flow along the curved internal surface of the ceiling and continuously along the internal surface of the snow horn and that effusive flows of liquefied CO.sub.2 may flow independently at the inner upper part of the snow horn and may be combined partly with one another at the inner lower part of the snow horn.

摘要: A method and apparatus for producing solid carbon dioxide snow blocks comprising a mold having a plurality of separate mold cavities, and a liquid CO.sub.2 manifold providing one or more injection nozzles in each of the mold cavities. A vent/vapor heat exchange with incoming liquid may be employed to improve liquid-to-snow conversion rate. The manifold may take a pressure drop turn at each branch to assure that each nozzle receives an adequate supply of liquid CO.sub.2. Each nozzle may have multiple orifices to assure that the snow is dispersed relatively evenly in each mold cavity. Each of the orifices may be located on a relative high point relative to the manifold to facilitate clearance of dry ice blockages in the manifold. A timer may be used to regulate injection. As an alternative or as a backup, fullness of one or more mold cavities may be detected by a sensor, and means may be provided to discontinue injection when one or more mold cavities have been filled.

摘要: A new METHOD AND APPARATUS FOR AUTOMATICALLY PRODUCING A SMALL BLOCK OF SOLID CARBON DIOXIDE is disclosed and described. The new method and apparatus is comprised of an electrical solenoid operated liquid fill valve, a dry ice block forming chamber having porous walls and/or lining attached to or forming its walls, a hydraulic cylinder and ram, a hydraulic pump assembly, a dry ice block forming chamber door, an electronic solenoid operated pneumatic valve, a pneumatic cylinder and ram, and a digital electronic microcontroller. A pressurized cryogenic Dewar-type tank containing liquefied carbon dioxide provides the cold carbon dioxide input fluid to this invention. In operation, liquid carbon dioxide is forced out of the pressurized Dewar-type tank to form carbon dioxide snow, with said snow being deposited into a dry ice block forming chamber having porous walls and/or lining attached to or forming its walls. As the carbon dioxide snow flows into said dry ice forming chamber, carbon dioxide snow and gaseous carbon dioxide are produced. The porous walls of the dry ice block forming chamber allow the gaseous carbon dioxide to pass through its pores and to escape into the surrounding atmosphere while trapping the carbon dioxide snow within the confines of said dry ice forming chamber. After the liquid carbon dioxide has been allowed to flow to deposit carbon dioxide snow in said dry ice forming chamber for a pre-selected length of time, a hydraulic pump is activated to cause a ram to be forced into one end of the dry ice block forming chamber. The carbon dioxide snow compacting plate, attached to the end of the hydraulic ram, moves through the dry ice block forming chamber and compresses the low density carbon dioxide snow within the forming chamber into a solid block of high density carbon dioxide (dry ice). After the low density carbon dioxide snow has been formed into a high density block of solid carbon dioxide, the hydraulic ram forces the finished product out of the device and into a catch container. The hydraulic ram is then returned to its up-most starting position, and the system is reset to make it ready to make another block of solid carbon dioxide.

摘要: Carbon dioxide (CO.sub.2) solid discs (dry ice) are produced from liquid carbon dioxide injected into an extrusion cylinder in which the extrusion piston compresses dry snow and extrudes it through a fixed die, thereby producing pellets of dry ice which are fed by gravity into a forming cylinder chamber in which is operated a hydraulic cylinder compresses the pellets into discs. The operation is controlled by switches and hydraulic system.

摘要: A closed bottom heat exchange tank is provided for containing CO.sub.2 snow and the tank includes upstanding and interconnected side wall portions and a top wall extending between and interconnecting the upper marginal edges of the side wall portions. A CO.sub.2 snow forming header pipe generally parallels and closely overlies the top wall and is removably anchored thereto by inverted U-shaped clamps secured to the top wall through the utilization of threaded fasteners. One end of the header pipe is open for sealed communication with a liquid CO.sub.2 supply line and the other end of the header pipe is closed. A plurality of depending tubular nipples including upper ends shaped to conform to the underside of the header pipe have the upper ends thereof secured to the header pipe at points spaced longitudinally therealong and the lower end portions of the nipples are loosely received downwardly through openings formed in the top wall of the heat exchange tank. The lower portion of the supply line is provided with small diameter jet discharge bores formed therethrough opening into the upper ends of the nipples and the lower ends of the nipples are diametrically enlarged and open downwardly toward the bottom of the tank.

摘要: Methods for providing an expendable refrigerant which is emitted from a snow horn at a low velocity thereby enabling snow agglomeration at a close proximity to the horn exit and accurately delivering a charge of snow with minimum vapor loss. The desired snow is produced by introduction of the relatively warm liquid refrigerant into an insulated compartment and in heat exchange relation with a tube therein having a plurality of length/diameter ratios. The liquid refrigerant is effective to warm the tube walls and results in a slight cooling of such liquid which is then passed to a sub-cooler and returned to the tube inlet for expansion in several stages therein to form the snow. The product snow is emitted from this horn at a relatively low velocity and may be accurately directed into cavities of such products as eviscerated fowl. In automated systems, a plurality of horns may be selectively operated to inject snow into a plurality of food products or alternately, such horns may be operated intermittently to deposit a blanket of snow over food products to be chilled or a continuous ribbon of snow atop products on a moving conveyor.
