    摘要: ALUMINUM TRIBROMIDE IS PREPARED BY REACTING METALLIC ALUMINUM WITH ELEMENTAL BROMINE IN A STIRRED LIQUID REACTION MEDIUM CONSISTING ESSENTIALLY OF MOLTEN ALUMINUM TRIBROMIDE. PREFERABLY THE ALUMINUM IN THE FORM OF SMALL PIECES OR PARTICLES IS SUSPENDED IN THE MOLTEN ALUMINUM TRIBROMIDE AND THE ELEMENTAL BROMIDE IS ADDED INCREMENTALLY TO THE SURFACE OF THE REACTION MEDIUM AT A RATE SUCH THAT THE TEMPERATURE OF THE MEDIUM AT A RATE MAINTAINED WITHIN THE RANGE OF ABOUT 100-140*C. THE METHOD IS SUITABLE FOR CONTINUOUS OPERATION.

    摘要: Stabilized solutions of aluminum bromide in cyclohexane are produced by adding 0.5 - percent by volume of benzene or 0.5 - 2 percent by weight of triphenol (1,1,3(3-hydroxyphenyl) propane). The rapid degradation of unstabilized solutions at room temperature is markedly retarded for a period of at least 30 days so that the solutions may be shipped and stored and used instead of solid aluminum bromide as a Lewis acid type catalyst.

    摘要: Alcohol soluble complexes of basic aluminum bromides may be prepared by adding zirconyl or zinc bromide or chloride, or zirconyl hydroxychloride or hydroxybromide, or mixtures of the above chlorides and bromides to an aqueous solution of 5/6 basic aluminum bromide, and drying the resulting mixture to a substantially friable solid, such as by vacuum or spray drying. The complexes preferably have an Al/Zn or AL/Zr mol ratio of about 3:1 to 20:1, and the complex solids preferably contain about 15 to 30 weight percent water by Karl Fischer analysis. Such complex solids have a high degree of solubility in anhydrous alcohol and a high compatibility with halogenated hydrocarbons. These properties make the complexes suitable for aerosol formulations and particularly antiperspirant compositions.

    摘要: A method of clarifying waters having an alkalinity of at least 100 ppm, calculated as CaCO.sub.3, which comprises:a. adding thereto, to form a treated water, an effective amount for the purpose of clarifying said waters of a low-basicity polynuclear aluminum species having the formula:Al.sub.n (OH).sub.m Z.sub.3n-mwherein, n is at least 1.0Z is a halide chosen from the group chloride, bromide, iodide, and mixtures thereof, andwherein the ratio of m/n ranges between about 0.25 to about 1.0 and at least 25 mole percent of the polynuclear aluminum species above has n equal to 2.0, and then,b. allowing sufficient time to form and build a floc dispersed in the treated water, which floc contains turbidity causing components, and then,c. phase separating the floc from the treated waters to obtain clarified water.
