An improved wastewater aeration and mixed liquor pumping arrangement for an orbital-type actuated sludge purification method includes the addition of a radial flow impeller on a shaft extension below the normal surface aerator. Both the combined radial flow impeller and surface aerator are positioned with respect to an end of a partition wall forming the flow channels of the orbital system such that both the impeller and the aerator pump the mixed liquor in the same direction, so that the mixed liquor is moved at a sufficient velocity through and around the various channels and returned. The radial flow impeller is positioned adjacent to the bottom of the orbital channel and enhances the propulsion of the mixed liquor along the bottom of the channel thus permitting deeper channels with attendant concrete and land area savings in constructing the system. The system may be operated at various wastewater levels so that when oxygenation levels are high or oxygenation needs are low, the level is lowered by a weir so that only the lower radial impeller functions to propel the mixed liquor. Auxiliary compressed or aspirated air may also be inputted through the lower radial impeller.

Apparatus for mixing air with liquid, an aerator or oxygenator, comprises a motor or other power drive generally mounted in vertical position on a floating or a fixed structure, the motor having a shaft extending downwards through an opening in the center area of the float or fixed structure and bearing on its lower part a screw pump portion located in a cylindrical volute section just below the water level. When the apparatus is operating, the waste-water is sucked by means of the screw pump from the bottom of the body of liquid at which the apparatus is positioned and is pushed upwards in order to be diffused by means of a centrifugal impeller having outwardly curved blades, at least one of which extends downward to merge with a spiral shaped portion of a blade on the screw pump. Increased efficiency of the apparatus as an aerator is achieved, allowing the exit velocity from the centrifugal impeller to be approximately equal to, or even greater than, the upward velocity through the screw pump portion, by increasing the kinetic energy of the fluid during passage through the centrifugal impeller or at least minimizing losses of kinetic energy. The resulting high exit velocity from the centrifugal impeller produces higher aerator efficiencies than have been achievable with prior art devices.

A clarification plant has an activation tank which is provided with a surface ventilation rotor. Activated sludge from a re-clarification tank is recycled by means of a conduit connected to the re-clarification tank, an outlet aperture thereof being located in the suction zone of the rotor. The activated sludge is sucked from the conduit into the rotor. Oxygen or an oxygen mixture is added in finely divided form to the recycled activated sludge before it enters the rotor to aerate the same.
