The present invention provides processes for quenching metals which are more energy efficient and less expensive than the current metal quenching processes. The quenching processes utilize a water-soluble aqueous quenching fluid and hydraulic equipment which uses water-insoluble, fire-resistant hydraulic fluid for an immersion or spray application. During quenching of metal in a quenching immersion bath or by quenching spray process, the aqueous quenching fluid becomes contaminated with the hydraulic fluid and no longer meets its quenching specifications. The process and system described herein involves removing and heating the contaminated quenching fluid to enable separation of the quenching fluid from the contaminants and recycling of the used quenching fluid back into a functional quenching bath or functional quenching spray. The separated hydraulic fluid is then recycled as fuel, e.g., biofuel or waste fuel, thereby reducing the amounts of waste product associated with quenching metals.

An opening (3a) preferably faces the nozzle (8) to remove the water, and the flow velocity is preferably set to 23 m/sec or more for better water flow inside the pipe (2).

A variable rate quench system allows the cooling of a heated workpiece to be controlled more closely. A liquid quenchant used in the system has an initial temperature, density and heat extraction index. The system comprises a first tank containing the liquid quenchant and to receive the workpiece and a second tank communicated to the first tank. The first tank has a means for agitating the liquid quenchant around the workpiece and a supply of make-up liquid quenchant communicated thereto. The second tank has a slurry of a non-liquid solid phase quenchant modifier and a means for selectively controlling addition of the slurry to the first tank. A real time data acquisition system acquires and analyzes temperature, density and agitation rate of the liquid quenchant, calculates an instantaneous heat extraction index of the liquid quenchant and compares the difference between the calculated index and a predetermined ideal index. Corrective action to minimize the difference is then taken. The first tank is also provided with a means for cycling a portion of the quenchant in the first tank through a heat exchanger external to the first tank to maintain the tank in an isothermal condition.

Heated steel parts are dropped through a vertical tube in which a quenching liquid is flowing upwardly from the sump tank and into the reservoir under hydrostatic-induced pressure. Turbulent flow of liquid across the surfaces of the steel parts produces a rapid cooling and quenching action. The liquid upflow is produced by a hydrostatic liquid head communicating with the lower end of the tube. The flow rate of the liquid, measured across the transverse cross section of the tube, is relatively constant, such that the quenching action is relatively uniform across a given part and from one part to another part.

A method and apparatus for quenching heated elongated workpieces by rotatably mounting the heated workpiece in a quench tank and subsequently rapidly flooding the tank with a quenching liquid. The heated workpiece is mounted within the quench tank by engaging opposite axial ends of the elongated workpiece. Transverse deflection of the workpiece is prevented by paired restraints located adjacent the top and bottom of the workpiece near the opposite ends. As the quenching liquid is flooded into the quench tank from a storage tank, the heated elongated workpiece is rotated about its central axis at a fixed speed.

Apparatus for rapidly and uniformly quenching coils of steel rod, tube or the like from an annealing temperature to a quench temperature by establishing a flow of quenching liquid from the inside of the coil about the wraps to the outside of the coil at a flow rate sufficient that the quenching liquid is maintained in its liquid state. The apparatus includes a quenching bath, means for lowering the coils into the bath, quenching liquid supply means disposed within the central open portion of the coils when lowered in the bath in quenching position, means to collet quenching liquid from around the outside diameter of the coils when in quenching position, and circulating means for providing a forced flow of quenching liquid from the supply means through the wraps of the coil to the collecting means. Preferred embodiments include a means for recirculating the quenching liquid, means for removing heat picked up from the coil wraps and means for controlling the temperature of the bath.

Low-carbon unalloyed steel strip is heated to a temperature at least above the A1 point, preferably above the A3 point, and is quenched to transform substantially all the austenite to martensite. Quenching is accomplished by passing the heated strip through an elongated restricted quench channel having highvelocity quench liquid flowing through the channel, either concurrently or countercurrently. The temperature and flow velocity of the quench liquid are regulated in the channel so as to provide an initial high rate of heat withdrawal from the strip and a subsequent lower rate of heat withdrawal during the time the strip is quenched through the temperature range of martensite formation, thereby effecting tempering of the martensite.
