An apparatus for the heat treatment of yarns in motion during various operations such as drawing or texturing includes an insulating enclosure which surrounds a heating block, the combination defining a lengthwise channel through which runs the yarn to be treated. Means for guiding the yarn through the channel is provided to ensure the desired positioning of the yarn inside the channel. The heating block consists of a unit comprising at least two cylindrical sections having different diameters and arranged in the extension of one another. The means for guiding the yarn is positioned along the length of the cylindrical sections so that the yarn may be kept at a constant distance from the surface of the cylinder of smaller diameter, with the result that the yarn passing above the smaller cylinder is heated by radiation. The means for guiding then direct the yarn so that the yarn may come into tangential contact with the surface of the cylinder of larger diameter, with the result that the yarn passing over the surface of the larger cylinder is heated by contact or conduction. Suction means for removing fumes produced by the heat treatment operation associated with a sleeve that closes the outlet end of the device is also provided.

A yarn heating apparatus is provided which is adapted for use in a false twist yarn crimping machine or the like. The heating apparatus comprises an arcuately curved heater plate mounted in a generally vertical orientation within a channel in an insulated housing, and having one or more yarn receiving grooves extending along its length. A flat cover is provided which includes an insert mounted on the inside of the cover, and which is sized to fill substantially the full width of the channel. The cover is hinged to the housing by an arrangement which permits the insertion and withdrawal of the insert along a path of travel which is parallel to the side walls of the channel, to thereby avoid injurious contact between the insert and walls of the channel. The inner face of the insert may be curved in conformance with the curvature of the heater plate, such that when the door is closed, the inner face defines a yarn passage of uniform cross-sectional configuration along the length of the heater plate. During operation of the machine, air rises along the vertically disposed yarn passage as a result of the chimney effect, to carry off the fumes emanating from the heated yarn. The uniform cross-sectional configuration of the passage minimizes heat loss by permitting the laminar flow of such air.

In a textile yarn texturing machine, a cooling arrangement for the heated false-twisted yarn is provided by a tube having a guide at the inlet end and a guide on the diametrically opposed side of the tube at the outlet end to guide the yarn in a helical path around the outer surface of the tube. The yarn makes one-half turn around the tube during its travel from the inlet end to the outlet end. Holes on the yarn path in the first part of the tube are connected to a suction device for fume extraction, and a cooling fluid may be passed through the tube to enhance cooling. The tube may form the second part of the cooling arrangement and is preferably inclined downwardly from a horizontally disposed first part towards the false twist device. The cooling arrangement or at least the first part is aligned with the preferably horizontally disposed heater located above the operator's aisle of the machine.
