An actuation portion effects a transition from the closed position to an operational position, opening the lid and sliding the sleeve downwardly exposing the flame generation system out of an opening in the sleeve.

The invention relates to the field of energy and is directed to a child-proof gas lighter, i.e. the gas lighter in which means for spark-forming neutralization are combined with a gas ignition mechanism. The gas ignition means comprises a gearwheel secured to a spigot and corrugated wheels positioned on a shaft which has a central portion on which the gearwheel is loosely positioned and which is formed as a polyhedron, and end portions to which the corrugated wheels are secured and which are cylindrical and are disposed within openings of brackets of the lighter body or of a holder of a spring-pressed flint. The shaft is mounted within the bracket openings so as to move along a direction of the flint spring action. An opening of the gearwheel is polyhedral, whereby a maximum diameter of the shaft in the area of the gearwheel installation is less than a minimum diameter of the opening of the gearwheel spigot. The lighter also has a support secured to the body or to a control lever, which support encircles the flint and is located between the corrugated wheels to bear the gearwheel when the shaft moves within the bracket openings toward the flint in a spark striking position. Whereby, in the absence of a force on the corrugated wheels, a gap is formed between the gearwheel spigot and the support the size of which gap is less than the stroke of the shaft end portions within the bracket openings.

An apparatus is disclosed for providing more uniform lighter spark wheel actuation. Uniform actuation is facilitated in the apparatus according to the invention by reducing the formation of deep grooves and high ridges in the flint. In one embodiment of the invention, a spark wheel coil formed from wire having at least one substantially flat side is utilized to reduce ridge formation. The spark wheel coil includes pitting in a transversal direction made on the outer surface of the coil. The pitting forms projections which protrude from the core of the coil and which, when contacting a pyrophoric flint while the coil spring is rotated about its axis, produce a tangential cutting across the pyrophoric flint to emit an ignition spark.

By forming a plurality of substantially parallel grooves in the peripheral surface of a cylindrical spark wheel blank, and then rolling the grooved spark wheel blank between at least two cooperating dies, an inexpensive, unique spark wheel is rapidly and efficiently formed having a multitude of ramp top surfaces terminating in raised sharp cutting edges and burrs throughout its outer peripheral surface. The spark wheel blank must rotate between the dies sufficiently to impart the desired abrasive characteristic to the spark wheel surface. The dies employed in the process of this invention must incorporate either a plurality of cutting edges which are spaced closely enough to prevent the spark wheel from bottoming out on the die during the rolling step or relief channels at the base of each cutting surface which prevent destruction of the abrasive spark wheel surface.

A lighter for cigarettes, cigars and the like having a fuel reservoir, and means to produce a spark to ignite fuel being emitted from the reservoir. An actuating button simultaneously producing the spark and opening the fuel outlet valve which when depressed causes a shaft to rotate and spin as it moves axially, a rasp wheel against a flint to produce the spark. The lower portion of the shaft is externally threaded and fits into an internally threaded rotatable sleeve. Axial movement of the shaft causes the threads to propel the shaft. When the button is depressed the sleeve does not rotate because of an external ratchet, and the button causes the shaft to turn. When the button is released, a spring urges it back to its original position, and it lifts the shaft with it. On the return stroke the ratchet permits the sleeve to rotate, thus permitting the shaft to retract without rotating. Hence, the rasp does not produce a spark on the return stroke.
