Abstract:
A surveying and measuring device and method of using the same is provided. The device, which is particularly suited for determining or measuring a rotational position of an object, comprises an elongate rigid member extending radially away from a known center of an object. Distal ends of the rigid member downwardly project points which may be compared to, for example, survey markers or known points.
Abstract:
A non-electronic head-worn system for providing visual inertial head orientation information to a person is disclosed. The system comprises a head-worn unit that displays at least one orientation reference symbol to the person wearing the unit wherein the orientation reference symbol stays in a fixed visual position for the person when the person's head changes orientation. The system also comprises a pitch indicator that gives visual pitch information to the person and a roll indicator that gives visual roll information to the person. The pitch indicator and the roll indicator are responsive to a pendulum, a rolling element, or a fluid in a reservoir. The pitch element and the roll element do not use electricity or electronics.
Abstract:
A post leveling assembly for indicating whether a fence or deck post is vertical or not is disclosed. The assembly includes a base, an arm pivotally mounted on the base and a marker disposed on the base. An assigned point on the arm lines up with the marker if the post is vertical and does not line up with the marker if the post is not vertical. In order for an installer to install a vertical post, the post is positioned initially in an approximately vertical position, the installer moves the post to the left or right until the assigned point on the arm aligns with the marker. The post is then permanently fixed into place.
Abstract:
A portable gravity-based self-levelling device for projecting a laser ray or a flat beam of laser rays (L, L11, L12, L110, L120) in a horizontal and/or vertical direction even if the device lies in an inclined position, comprises: a case (C) in the form of a hollow housing (1); a pendulum (11) suspended inside the case (C) by suspension means (5, 9); means (23A, 23B, 24) for damping the pendulum swing; means (18, 19) for adjusting the equilibrium position of the pendulum (11); and, mounted on the pendulum (11), means (12) for projecting collimated visible laser rays. The suspension means comprise at least one first mechanical decoupling member such as a ball or roller bearing (5), associated with the hollow housing (1), and, lying in a plane perpendicular to that of the first member (5), a second mechanical decoupling member rigidly secured to the movable part (6) of said first member and supporting the pendulum (11).
Abstract:
A normal pendulum is coupled to an inverted pendulum to provide a composite conjugate pendulum having an effective length much longer than the actual physical lengths. The motion of the pendulum is sensed by a capacitive transducer and pivot friction is minimized by a two-bar two-strap suspension system.

Abstract:
An illuminated level has a housing containing a solid body pivotally mounted in the housing and forming a pendulum which can pivot to a first position in which the surface is accurately level. A light path is provided through the solid body having an exit opening at the pivot point and an entry opening the opposite end. A source of laser light on the housing is arranged to transmit light through an orifice on the housing so that the light through the orifice enters the entry opening to pass along the path when the solid body is in the first position and is prevented from entering the entry opening when the solid body is out of the level position. A light receiver in the housing at the outlet is responsive to the passage of light through the path for providing a sound indicating when the solid body is in the first position.
Abstract:
A magnetically damped inclinometer has a shaft with attached pendulum that rotates. The rotation causes an index member to rotate past one or a set of magnets or electromagnets that are connected to the load. The magnet or electromagnet may be mounted directly to the load or it may be in the form of an off center ring. Another embodiment uses a spring to bias two magnets apart. A cam is attached to the shaft such that, as the pendulum and shaft rotate, a roller connected with the load or spreader bar allows the spring to push the magnets farther apart. The damped inclinometers are used to determine and provide information to respond to the initial sway of a load prior to bringing the load to a stop.
