A method of processing seismic data, wherein a digital seismic trace is provided comprising at least one seismic loop. A selected discrete wavelet transform of the digital seismic trace is obtained as a function of scale sj and shifted sample time tk. From the discrete wavelet transform, a singularity spectrum is obtained for the at least one seismic loop, and a selected function is fitted to the singularity spectrum. Based on the fitted function, a reconstructed seismic trace may be calculated. The method may be embodied in the form of software code instructions in a computer program product.

The modified seismic dataset may be noise-attenuated seismic data or may be a noise model that is subtracted from the original data to produce noise-attenuated data.

A technique for reconstructing a seismic wavefield includes receiving data over one or more channels of a plurality of channels from a plurality of stations. The data is recorded by a plurality of seismic receivers and represent measurements of properties of the seismic wavefield. Each station includes a region in space including one or more seismic receivers. Each channel either measures a property of the seismic wavefield or a property of the seismic wavefield after the seismic wavefield has undergone a known transformation. At least one channel is derived as a function of one or more other channels. The technique includes using a processor based machine to process the data to model the seismic wavefield as a sum of basis functions; apply to the basis functions at least one forward transformation that describes the measurements received over the channel(s); and determine optimum basis functions based at least in part on the measurements.

Physical relationships between the estimated derivatives including the free surface condition and wave equations are used to estimate near-surface material properties in the vicinity of the receiver group. Another embodiment of the invention is disclosed wherein the physical relationships used to estimate material properties are derived from the physics of plane waves arriving at the receiver group, and the group of receivers does not include any buried receivers.
