A control system controls the motion of a physical subject such as a mechanical system to damp or enhance the motion via a single transducer which alternates in a time-discrete manner between the task of reading a signal indicative of the state of the subject and the task of influencing said state by the application of a force. Control of motion or vibration is achieved through a series of actuating pulses interleaved with sensing operations. The same single transducer alternately acts as input to the control system from the subject and output from the control system to the subject. The control system provides full and individual control of all important harmonic modes of vibration of a subject mechanical system.

A transducer system for a stringed musical instrument having a bridge for supporting a plurality of string saddles, each having a surface for receiving a transducer member of the system. The transducer member is comprised of one or more ceramic crystals supported between conductive strips and encapsulated by an electrically insulating covering. The crystals are responsive to vibrations of the string by way of a spring support insert in the saddle, but the crytals are not directly coupled to the saddle.

A saddle of a multi-stringed instrument includes a highly efficient means of coupling to sensors, vibrations from plucked musical instruments strings. The saddle includes a downwardly extending body portion for mechanically conveying string vibrations to transducers by way of cavities beneath a string saddle that define a vertically compliant area of sensitivity. The vertically compliant area beneath each respective string is mechanically responsive to vertical string motion. These areas couple the strings to transducers mounted within said cavities, and are selectively sensitive to vertical string vibrations from the top of the saddle, beneath the string. The uni-directional sensitivity does not respond to vibratory information from beneath the saddle and is only sensitive from its top or positive Z axis direction. This eliminates the introduction of micro-phonic noise from the body of the instrument in the amplified signal. Isolating the vertical component of the string vibration further maximizes fidelity, clarity of sound and responsiveness. The cavities housing the transducers are arranged in alternating phase relationships to avoid phase cancellation effects between the adjacent transducers. A string saddle kit for a multi-stringed instrument includes multiple string saddle segments each providing a highly efficient means of coupling to sensors, vibrations from plucked musical instruments strings.

A system is disclosed that provides sound control for an acoustic musical instrument. Typical to all acoustic instruments, the instruments have a structure or housing that defines a vented acoustic chamber. An input or sound inducing mechanism (such as strings of a guitar) imparts a vibration to the structure which causes acoustic waves to resonate within the acoustic chamber. The motion of air in and out of the vent causes acoustic waves to emanate from the chamber that combine with the acoustic waves emanating from the structure to form sound/musical notes. In accordance with the invention, a system controls the sound emanating from such an acoustic instrument. In accordance with one embodiment of the invention, at least one integral or smart sensor is disposed adjacent a sensing location of the structure, and the sensor is configured to generate sensed electric signals indicative of the magnitude of structural vibration of the structure at the sensing location. A controller in communication with the sensor, includes a processor for processing the sensed electric signals in accordance with a predetermined method (e.g., computer program). In response, the controller produces output electrical signals. At least one integral or smart actuator is disposed adjacent an actuator location of the structure, and the actuator is in communication with the controller and is configured to receive the output electrical signals and induce structural vibration of the structure at the actuator location. As a result of the foregoing structure and operation the induced vibration of the structure at the actuator location creates acoustics that alter the sound emanating from the acoustic chamber as well as that emanating from the structure. Specifically, signature frequency response characteristics of acoustic instruments like damping and frequency values of structural and acoustic resonances can be altered to alter the sound of the acoustic instruments. The use of integral or smart sensors and actuators put no restrictions on the movement of the acoustic instrument player since they are part of the guitar structure.

In the violin family of acoustical instruments an electrical transducer designed to convert vibration into an electrical signal is to be mounted on the bass bar of such instruments. The electrical transducer may be mounted on the bass bar of the instrument, and the position of the electrical transducer on the bass bar may vary by instrument type. Such a location would be about the center of the bass bar. An electrical wire is connected to the electrical transducer on one end and to an electrical connector at the other end. The electrical connector passes through the sidewall of the instrument and is secured thereto. An external device may be connected to the electrical connector, placing the external device in communication with the electrical signals produced by the instrument when it is played. The external device may modify the electrical signal produced by the electrical transducer. Alternatively the electrical transducer may be wireless.
