The present invention is an end loaded tape drive for an elongate tape cartridge having a door in one of its sides proximate one end of the cartridge. The tape drive includes an elongate table mounted at least partially within an elongate housing upon which the cartridge may rest. The table is movable in an x-y plane defined by an x axis and a y axis. The drive includes a magnetic head which is fixed against movement in an x-y plane. A cartridge door opening mechanism is provided for opening the access door of the cartridge sufficiently to provide access to the tape by the magnetic head. Movement of the table in the y direction actuates the door opening mechanism and movement of the table in the x direction positions the tape in a read/write position. A motor is further provided for moving the length of tape within the cartridge along the magnetic head when the tape is in the read/write position.

An apparatus for recording and/or reproducing information on/from an information carrier accommodated in a cartridge comprises a chassis, a cartridge room in which the cartridge can be brought, a loading mechanism by means of which the cartridge can be urged from a loading position into its operational position in the cartridge room and a drive mechanism including a drive member for driving the information carrier via a driveable device of the cartridge. By means of a switch mechanism the drive member and the driveable device are in contact with each other for driving the driveable device into a stand-by position when the information carrier in the cartridge is in the state of treat and vice versa. A recorder slidably receives the opposite edges of a magnetic tape cartridge within grooved guides and locks the cartridge in an operative position using an opposite pair of movable catches which engage notches in the opposite edges of the cartridge. Cartridge ejection is effected by energizing a solenoid which pulls the opposite catches out of the cartridge edge notches along enough for a pair of spring-loaded elements to push the cartridge forward out of the operative position. A wheel located within the cartridge and coupled to drive a length of magnetic tape therein is engaged with and driven by a drive wheel when the cartridge is in the operative position. The drive wheel is mounted on a drive shaft having an end thereof opposite the drive wheel rotatably supported by a bearing and an opposite portion thereof adjacent the drive wheel supported by another bearing which is resiliently mounted by a spring within an aperture at the top of the housing for the recorder. A motor mounted within the housing provides positive, non-resonant driving of the drive wheel via a bevelled wheel mounted on the motor shaft and having a resilient outer periphery thereof engaged with a second bevelled wheel mounted on the drive shaft adjacent the first-mentioned bearing.

A magnetic recording/reproducing apparatus including a detecting member which is operated to rotate a drive source disposed in a housing, and a slidable operating member for operating the detecting member. By simply pressing an indicator portion of the operating member with a small force from the front face side of the housing, the cartridge 4 is easily ejected by electrical power as a result of rotation of the drive source. In conventional magnetic recording/reproducing apparatuses, when the cartridge, loaded in the apparatus, is ejected therefrom, the back end of the cartridge must be firmly gripped to pull it out. Therefore, more force is required to pull out the cartridge than is required to insert it, making it very difficult to pull out the cartridge. The magnetic recording/reproducing apparatus of the invention overcomes this problem.
