A joint between high voltage cables is formed by employing a connector having the same diameter as the cable dielectric. A layer of stress controlling material extends from the cable screen on one side of the joint, along the cable dielectric, across the connector, along the dielectric of the other cable and on to the screen of the other cable. A layer of conducting material extends on top of the stress controlling layer and longitudinally encompasses the conductor connector and overlaps the dielectric of both cables. An insulating layer encloses the conductive layer. Further layers of conductive and/or stress controlling material may be applied around the joint. In addition to being used in the formation of a joint between high voltage cables, a layer of stress controlling material with a layer of conducting material on its outer surface is employed in forming a termination of a high voltage cable.

In an electric cable power transmission line of the class wherein three phase metal sheath single core power cable sections are interconnected by junction boxes, two sets of ordinary junction boxes at the opposite ends of each unit line section are grounded, two sets of junction boxes are provided in each unit line section, at each set of the insulating junction boxes the sheaths of the cables of one phase on one side of the insulating junction boxes are crossconnected by cross-connecting wires to the sheaths of the cables of another phase on the other side thereby forming three loop circuits each including the grounding connections of the ordinary junction boxes, the sheaths of the cable sections and the cross-connecting wires, saturable reactors are connected in series with only one or two of the loop circuits. This arrangement reduces the number of the saturable reactors and protective devices for corrosion preventing layers as well as the inductive interference to nearby communication lines.

A cable arrangement where three cables have at least two cross-bonding locations when transmitting power between a first location and a second location. At the cross-bonding location not only the screens but also the water sensing wires are cross-bonded in cross-bonding devices. Thus, voltage differences between the water sensing wires and the screens of the respective cables in the three-phase system can be avoided. A particular application is found in high power transmission systems using high voltage cables.

The invention relates to interruption of screens of power cables (1,2) with double stress cone systems (23,30). Such interruption systems have hitherto always been made at the same place as the cable core joints. However, with interruption systems at the location of the cable core joint, undesirable gas pockets can form at the interface between the joint insulation and the double stress cone system. In order to eliminate this problem, the interruption system is provided at a position remote from the cable core joint.
