Provided are a method and a device of a host with IPv4 application for performing communication. The method of the host with IPv4 application for performing data communication includes the following steps: the IPv4 application generates an IPv4 packet sent to a communication end; when confirming the type of the network the host is located in is an IPv6 network, the host transforms the IPv4 packet head of the IPv4 packet to an IPv6 packet header, and sends it to the communication end via the IPv6 network. With this invention, it can be accomplished that according to the type of the network the host is located in, the host with IPv4 application communicates with a communication end; the processing load of the system is lightened; the probability that invalidation occurs at a single node is reduced; the smooth migration and transition from original IPv4 application to IPv6 system are facilitated.

It is communicated from a sender with a private address outside a subnet of the receiver through a translator. The translator retrieves a lease to at least one of a public address or a port from a lease manager, translates the private address and the private port into a public address and a public port and communicates identifying data such as the public address and the public port to the receiver. If a response is communicated to the private sender, the response may be communicated to the private sender through the network. The public address and the public port on the message may be translated to the private address and the port of the private sender and the private address and the private port may be used to properly route the response to the private sender.

Techniques for enhancing or replacing host operating system functionality by leveraging guest operating system functionality are disclosed. Incoming data is received from a computing resource of a host operating system, and, before the incoming data is transmitted to a higher-level module in the host operating system, the incoming data is intercepted by a set of one or more leveraged guest modules in a guest operating system. After intercepting the incoming data, the leveraged guest modules perform one or more operations on the incoming data. The leveraged guest modules may provide more advanced support and capabilities to perform these operations than any counterpart functionality in the host operating system. In addition to performing these operations, the leveraged guest modules also determine whether or not to return the incoming data to the host operating system.

Each device determines whether received traffic qualifies for end to end route control and whether the device at the other end supports end to end route control. If so, then the route control devices determine a routing mode, such as tunneling or address translation, and routing parameters. The performance of the selected path is monitored and is changed if the performance becomes unacceptable. Path performance can be measured using one-way measurement techniques that use a common inbound path or a control channel.

Methods and systems consistent with the present invention establish a virtual network on top of current IP network naming schemes. The virtual network uses a separate layer to create a modification to the IP packet format that is used to separate network behavior from addressing. As a result of the modification to the packet format, any type of delivery method may be assigned to any address or group of addresses. The virtual network also maintains secure communications between nodes, while providing the flexibility of assigning delivery methods independent of the delivery addresses.

The method comprises maintaining at each of said plurality of entities a table mapping one or more private addresses of the entity to one or more public addresses of the Network Address Translation function, and, for each association initiation message generated by an entity, including in said layer 4 packet chunk of the message the public IP address(es) of the Network Address Translation function obtained from said table for the corresponding private IP address(es).
