Folding and unfolding circuits of a video signal in a video recording/reproducing apparatus for recording a video signal of a full bandwidth including a chroma signal and a luma signal on a recording medium having an effective limited bandwidth and reproducing the recorded luma signal and chroma signal into the video signal of a full bandwidth, use a frequency folding technique by means of sub-Nyquist sampling. A region of a high-frequency signal is folded onto a region of a limited low-frequency luma signal. A remaining high-frequency luma signal is folded on the remaining region of the limited low-frequency luma signal, to thereby record the luma signals according to a field period. The full-bandwidth video signal is then reproduced by band-compensation during reproducing. Thus, crosstalk between channels is decreased to thereby obtain a clear picture of high resolution.

Apparatus is disclosed for processing video information which is reproduced from a magnetic recording medium in a video cassette recorder. The luminance portion of the video signal, which is "folded" about a sampling frequency carrier before recording on magnetic tape, is unfolded after being read from the magnetic tape to restore the bandwidth of the signal, and is applied in parallel through horizontal and vertical comb filters. The combined output of the horizontal comb filter and the vertical comb filter may include incompletely cancelled horizontal and vertical components of the folding frequency and sidebands due to the effects of picture contents. An edge detector receptive to the unfolded video signal responds to an encountered brightness edge, and generates a signal which varies the proportions of the video outputs of the horizontal and vertical comb filters in the combined output.

An improved adaptive folding circuit for a video signal recording/reproducing system. The improved adaptive folding circuit has an adaptive emphasis circuit and an adaptive deemphasis circuit for receiving a luminance signal. The adaptive emphasis circuit includes a horizontal high pass filter for filtering the luminance signal and a horizontal low pass filter for filtering the luminance signal. A level detector is provided to receive the output of the horizontal high pass filter, the output of the level detector being provided to a look-up-table. A soft switch is controlled by the output of the look-up-table to provide for output of a proper mixture of the outputs of the horizontal high pass filter and/or the horizontal low pass filter. The adaptive deemphasis circuit attenuates the high frequency luminance level and outputs an adaptively deemphasized luminance signal to a modulator for modulation according to a modulation frequency Ff. An adder receives the outputs of the soft switch and the modulator and provides an improved adaptively folded luminance signal for output through a low pass filter and digital-to-analog converter.

Apparatus is disclosed for processing incoming scanning lines of video information having a nominal bandwidth for use with a bandwidth degrading path, such as magnetic tape.A preprocessor includes a preprocessor comb filter for comb filter processing of the incoming scanning lines to assure the presence of spectral gaps between energy groups in the spectrum of the video information. A fold over circuit folds over high frequency video components of the video information about a predetermined folding frequency to provided folded video. A low pass filter filters the resultant folded video to limit the spectrum thereof to be not greatly in excess of one half of the folding frequency.A postprocessor includes an unfolding circuit for unfolding the signal from the path about the predetermined folding frequency. A postprocessor comb filter processes the unfolded signal to eliminate unwanted alias components therein resulting during the unfolding process and provides a resultant video signal closely approximating the bandwidth and content of the original video information.

In video tape recording apparatus composite video signals are separated into their luminance and chrominance components for processing prior to recording. The luminance components are digitized, adaptively temporal and spatial filtered, and folded into a reduced frequency spectrum to generate a digital signal that is converted to analog form to modulate the frequency of the luminance carrier signal used in video tape recording. The chrominance components are converted to the color-under signals used in video tape recording. In video tape playback apparatus the color-under signals are converted up in frequency to provide chrominance components for inclusion in reproduced composite video signals. Also, in the video tape playback apparatus, the frequency modulation of the luminance carrier signal is detected to recover folded luminance signals which are digitized, time-base-corrected, unfolded, and adaptively temporal and spatial filtered to suppress aliases associated with unfolding to generate a digital signal that is converted to analog form to provide luminance components for inclusion in reproduced composite video signals. The backward compatability of the video tape recordings when playing them back in video tape playback apparatus already in the field is accomodated by de-emphasizing the high frequencies of the luma during recording. The high frequencies of the luma can be re-emphasized during playback to maintain substantially full NTSC or PAL luminance bandwidth.

The video signal is digitized and supplied to a digital band-splitting filter with a cross-over frequency at one-half said prescribed maximum frequency, for separating the digitized video signal into samples of a lower-frequency-band component and into samples of a higher-frequency-band component. A balanced modulator is connected for modulating a folding carrier wave of the prescribed maximum frequency, which modulation is done in accordance with the higher-frequency-band component to generate a balanced modulation signal; and the balanced modulation signal is linearly combined with the lower-frequency-band component to generate the folded-spectrum video signal. Preferably, the sampling rate of the digitized video signal is exactly the Nyquist rate of the prescribed maximum frequency, reduces the balanced modulation of a suitably phased folding carrier wave to multiplication of successive samples of the modulating signal alternately by plus one and by minus one. Such multiplications are done without having to use a digital multiplier.

An improved video signal recording system for recording a full bandwidth video signal on a limited bandwidth medium is disclosed. The recording system includes an encoder, coupled to an input terminal, for adaptively processing a composite video signal in response to a motion representative signal, and producing two signals; a luminance signal, having attenuated high frequencies subsampled so as to be folded into a spectral hole in the low frequencies, and being bandwidth limited to the limited bandwidth of the recording medium; and a combined signal including a chrominance and a motion component. Luminance signal recording circuitry records the folded luminance signal on the medium and chrominance signal recording circuitry records the combined chrominance and motion signal on the medium. An improved video signal playback system for reproducing such a prerecorded video signal is also disclosed. The playback system consists of a luminance signal playback circuit for retrieving the prerecorded luminance signal from the medium, and chrominance signal playback circuit for retrieving the prerecorded combined chrominance and motion signals from the medium. A decorder extracts the motion signal and the chrominance signal from the combined chrominance and motion signal and an unfolding circuit extracts the luminance high frequencies from the prerecorded folded luminance signal and adaptively regenerates the full bandwidth luminance signal in response to the motion signal. This regenerated full bandwidth luminance signal is combined with the chrominance signal to reproduce the originally recorded composite video signal. A recording medium previously recorded by such a recording system is capable of being played back on a standard playback system without objectionably artifacts in the reproduced image.

A system for reproducing a luminance signal from a medium containing a previously recorded luminance signal with a high-frequency portion thereof compressed in dynamic range includes a circuit for recovering that luminance signal from the medium. Filtering is done to separate the low-frequency and compressed-in-dynamic-range high-frequency portions of the recovered luminance signal from each other. A corer responds to the separated compressed-in-dynamic-range high-frequency portion of the recovered luminance signal to provide a cored high-frequency portion with expanded dynamic range and reduced noise. The level of the cored high-frequency portion with expanded dynamic range and reduced noise is then boosted by a predetermined amount to compensate for energy losses during the compression of the dynamic range and added back to the low-frequency portion of the recovered luminance signal to reproduce a full-band luminance signal with at least partially restored dynamic range for high-frequencies and without readily visible high-frequency noise.
