    摘要: A shear is disclosed for subdividing an elongated product moving longitudinally in a horizontal plane. The shear includes upper and lower continuously rotating blades respectively coacting in a radially overlapping relationship at first and second laterally disposed cutting zones. An upstream switch operates to divert the product laterally across the cutting zones to separate a leading end from an intermediate section in the first cutting zone, and to separate a trailing end from the intermediate section in the second cutting zone.

    摘要: A rotating shear for cutting a rapidly moving wire has a pair of cutter heads rotatable about parallel axes and having respective blades. A drive synchronously counterrotates the heads about the respective axes with close juxtaposition of the blades on each revolution. Thus when the wire is between the heads level with the blades it is severed thereby. A guide tube surrounds the wire upstream of the heads and has a downstream end movable generally parallel to the axes and positioned adjacent and between the cutter heads. The wire exits from the guide tube in a direction generally perpendicular to the plane of the head axes. A guide head fixed to one of the cutter heads is formed with a generally helical guide groove centered on the respective axis. An axially and radially displaceable but angularly generally nondisplaceable follower can move between a position engaged in the groove and axially entrainable thereby and a position clear thereof. An actuator displaces the follower between the positions. A rigid link is connected between the follower and the guide tube so that when the follower is in the groove the tube can be pulled axially into and out of alignment with the blades for cropping of the wire and when out of the groove the tube can be moved independently of the head.

    摘要: A method of manufacture of staple glass fibers by drawing a plurality of glass filaments, from a bushing and chopping them directly into staple fibers without intervening winding and storage is characterized by initiating the drawing by forming the filaments into a coil on the circumference of an auxiliary roller, forming an initial winding by rotating the roller with progressively increasing surface speed until the filaments advancing towards the roller attain the normal production drawing speed for the bushing, then diverting the filaments while still travelling at that speed, and without breaking them, into driving contact with a cutter back-up roll driven with substantially the same surface speed as the production speed, advancing the diverted filaments by means of the roll into a cutting zone whereat they are both severed from the initial winding and continuously chopped into staple fibers.

    摘要: An improved flying saw of simplified and more economical construction is disclosed which operates smoothly with reduced vibration and which performs in an improved manner at higher operating speeds. The machine has a main crank arm with a rotary saw blade at one end and an adjustable counterweight at the opposite end, a stabilizing crank arm with a counterweight, and a connecting rod causing the arms to rotate in unison. Both arms telescope to permit simultaneous adjustments of arm radius while screw jacks adjust the height of the crank axis relative to the work. The work is supported on a wheel having a special sliding-block eccentric which moves the wheel in a vertical direction to deflect the work into the path of the rotary saw blade. A quick-drop support bracket permits lowering of the wheel and its eccentric away from the path of the work in an emergency situation so that flow from the mill need not be interrupted.
