摘要: A method of stacking sod rolls on a pallet includes operating a sod handling apparatus of a sod harvester to form a plurality of layers of the sod rolls on the pallet. Each layer contains nine sod rolls comprising a row of five sod rolls positioned next to each other, a first pair of sod rolls oriented perpendicular to the five sod rolls of the row and positioned adjacent an inner end of the row, and a second pair of sod rolls oriented perpendicular to the five sod rolls of the row and positioned adjacent the inner end of the row parallel and in alignment with the first pair of sod rolls. The plurality of layers are flipped relative to each other in an alternating manner to position the row of five sod rolls of each upper layer atop the first and second pairs of sod rolls of a respective lower layer parallel with the row of five sod rolls of the lower layer, and the first and second pairs of sod rolls of the upper layer atop the row of five sod rolls of the lower layer parallel with the first and second pairs of sod rolls of the lower layer.

摘要: Synchronizing variables can be tuned based on a sod harvester's speed. A sod harvester's control system can include a tuning component that receives as input a current speed of the sod harvester. The tuning component can apply logic to the current speed to calculate values for synchronizing variables that are tuned for the current speed. In this way, the sod harvester can be operated with precision across a range of speeds, including at high speeds.

摘要: A method of operating a stacking head of a sod harvester includes: (a) repeatedly transferring sod slabs from a transfer station located along a conveyor assembly of the sod harvester to a pallet station of the sod harvester to form a loaded pallet at the pallet station; (b) during replacement of the loaded pallet with an empty pallet, forming a stack of slabs at the transfer station; and (c) transferring the stack of slabs from the transfer station to the pallet station for deposit on the empty pallet when received at the pallet station, and repeating (a) to (c) in a continuous sod harvesting process.

摘要: A method of stacking sod rolls can include the steps of: a) moving a head of a sod handling apparatus into a sod pickup location containing a plurality of sod rolls; b) picking-up a first sod roll with a first sod carrier, picking-up a second sod roll with a second sod carrier, and picking-up a third sod roll with a third sod carrier; c) moving the head to a sod drop-off location; d) releasing the first sod roll from the first sod carrier at the sod drop-off location; e) after releasing the first sod roll, moving the second sod carrier toward the first sod carrier and moving the third sod carrier toward the first sod carrier to reduce the spacing between the second and third rolls of sod; and f) depositing the second sod roll and third sod roll at the drop-off location.

摘要: A sod harvester and a method for maintaining the integrity of a sod roll during sod roll transfer with the sod harvester having a first power assist rotatable sod roll cradle containing a set of spokes with opposed faces that laterally engage and dynamically cradle a sod roll as the sod roll falls from an upper conveyor to a lower conveyor so that a further set of opposed faces on the rotatable spokes laterally engage a further sod roll on an upper conveyor through a torque applied to the sod cradle by a low power hydraulic motor as the sod roll falls from the upper conveyor to the lower conveyor with the cycle repeated with each sod roll that is discharged from the upper conveyor to thereby maintain the integrity of the sod rolls within the sod harvester.

摘要: Sod harvester stacking head and stacking conveyor configurations can increase the rate at which sod can be harvested. The movement of the stacking head and/or the stacking conveyor can be controlled to maximize the rate at which the stacking head can remove sod from the stacking conveyor. A stacking head can employ multiple pick up positions. A stacking conveyor may also advance sod for pick up at varying rates. A stacking head may include a pivoting connection to allow the stacking head to rotate around a pivot during a pick up operation.

摘要: Sod harvesters can be configured to stack rolls of sod in unique layers on a pallet. A sod harvester can include control circuitry that is configured to operate a stacking head and a stacking conveyor in a manner that enables the layers to be formed. The structure of the layers can facilitate harvesting wider rolls even when narrower pallets are used to transport the rolls.

摘要: A stacking head for stacking rolls of sod can include a number of screw assemblies that are employed to secure and remove sod rolls from a stacking conveyor. Each screw assembly can include a center stake and a corkscrew that pierce a roll as the stacking head is forced into the roll. The rate at which the stacking head is moved vertically relative to the roll can be synchronized with the rate at which each screw assembly is rotated. This synchronization ensures that the corkscrew will pass into the roll while the stacking head is simultaneously forced into the roll without damaging the delicate sod.
