An apparatus for operative cleaning and preparation of dental handpieces is made as an integrated unit having holding stubs (6) for receiving the handpieces inside a treating chamber (1, 30), which is designed in a pressure resisting manner and with heating means (12, 56) such that it is directly usable for autoclave treatment of the handpieces. Through the holding stubs (6) and in accordance with a control program it is possible to supply warm water and oil to the respective channels in the handpieces. The apparatus may appear as a table unit (32) holding all what is required for a complete cleaning lubrication and sterilization cycle.

The autoclave has an inlet and an outlet for different fluids, such as cleaning and rinsing liquids, and sterilization and maintenance media. The autoclave incorporates several gas-tight closable chambers each of which is equipped with at least one instrument holder. Each chamber and instrument holder is provided with an individually adjustable and controllable inlet and outlet for the fluids and media. Each chamber, as a result of the autoclaving process, defines a sterile package in the form of a closed storage vessel for at least one treatment instrument. The chambers are connected to a central unit for choosing a sterilization program, depending upon the exposure of the instrument outside the autoclave, as well as preparing and controlling the fluids and media.

Diffuse lamellar keratitis or DLK is a recently recognised post-surgical condition involving an inflammation that occurs in laser corneal surgery patients. This condition is typically associated with the LASIK surgical procedure (Laser Assisted In Situ Keratomileusis). The cause is presently unknown. the present invention provides a sterilization apparatus, which may be a retrofitting of the existing sterilizer, which reduces the occurrence of DLK and also methods for maintaining the sterilizer to reduce the occurrence of DLK.

The invention relates to a method in autoclaves, the autoclave being divided into imaginary areas, the areas being heated by the feeding of steam into the areas in order to heat goods which have been placed in the autoclave so that it reaches sterilising temperature, whereby the feeding of heat between the areas is controlled. Such control is effected by successive registration of the temperatures in the areas and when the temperatures differ between the areas, the feeding of steam to the area which temporarily has a higher temperature is ceased, and as soon as the temperature in the adjacent area has passed the last mentioned temperature, the feeding of steam to that same area is resumed. In a device for the carrying out of the method, a temperature meter is arranged in each area. These meters are connected to a control unit, which is arranged to register the measured temperatures given by the meters and to control the function of the valves in the steam feeding pipes to the areas according to the method of the invention.
