A sensor, sensor disk, sensor measurement correction system, and method used in measuring a parameter in the refining zone. The sensor includes a spacer that spaces its sensing element from the disk. In one preferred embodiment, the spacer is made of an insulating material that insulates the sensing element from the thermal mass of the disk to prevent the thermal mass from affecting sensor measurement. The sensor includes a housing carried by the spacer that, in turn, carries the sensing element. Where the sensing element is a temperature sensing element, the housing is thermally conductive and the housing and spacer enclose the sensing element. Each sensor is disposed in the refining surface, preferably in its own separate bore in the disk and flush with or below axial refiner bar height. Signals from one or more sensors are processed by a processing device linked to a module containing calibration data that is applied to make sensor measurements more accurate. The module holds calibration data from sensors that are precalibrated before the sensor disk in which they are assembled is shipped, along with the module, to a fiber processing plant where the disk is installed in a refiner and the module connected to the processing device. In one preferred embodiment the sensor or sensors are carried by a sensor module that can be a removable segment of a refiner disk.

A colloid mill utilizes a motor-driven shaft configuration that connects to the rotor of the colloid mill to the electric motor rotor. In this way, the mill rotor shaft is directly driven. Complex gear or belt drive arrangements between a separate electric motor and the fluid processing components of the colloid mill are thus avoided. Moreover, the gap between the mill rotor and mill stator can be adjusted simply by axially translating the motor-driven shaft. Such translation is provided by a timing belt-based arrangement to limit backlash. As a result, a simple hand-operated knob or stepper motor arrangement can be used to control the gap.

The refining apparatus comprises juxtaposed disks with refining surfaces on the opposed faces, one disk rotating relatively to the other disk to work on the material therebetween. A typical refiner is disclosed in U.S. Pat. No. 3,049,307; however, the invention is applicable to various types of refiners including single rotating disk refiners and counter-rotating disk machines. Disks normally are cast which results in relatively soft low wear resistance that wear out and must be replaced regularly. The disks of this invention are constructed of the hardest wear resistant materials known including metal carbides.

Apparatus for refining lignocellulosic material is disclosed comprising a pair of opposed co-operating refining elements intended for a disk refiner for the disintegration of the lignocellulosic material in a refining gap between two opposed counter-rotating refining disks. The refining elements are intended to be placed directly in front of each other on opposed refining disks, and both refining elements are formed with refining surfaces with bars and grooves. In order to prevent generated steam from flowing rearward in the refining gap, a first refining element is formed with a first radially restricted zone with elevated bars and a second radially restricted zone without bars directly outside the first zone. A second opposed refining element is formed with a third radially restricted zone without bars, which third zone is located directly in front of the first and the second zone on the first refining element.
