    摘要： A method of manually sorting flat articles (4) into a sorting case (7) comprising sorting slots (8) consists in generating an identification signal (100) designating a sorting slot of said sorting case, into which slot said article to be sorted is to be placed, and then placing said flat articles to be sorted in a stack and in taking the articles one-by-one from the top of the stack. The method also consists in automatically forming (310) digital images (14) of the top of the stack at a certain rate, the digital image of each article of the top of the stack including a sorting indication. Finally, on the basis of the digital image of said article on the top of the stack, the method further consists in automatically generating (330) said identification signal as a flat article is being taken from the top of the stack of flat articles.

    摘要： Apparatus and procedure for sorting mail and the like rapidly and accurately. An array of sorting modules each contain a shelf or base and a series of vertical separator panels which divide the shelf area into a plurality of bins into which individual mail items may be selectively placed. A frontal connection feature extends transversely of the shelf, holding all of the grid of panels for movability as a set upwardly away from the shelf, but also individually movable transversely to give a bin-size adjustment to individual bins automatically in accordance with respective bins' needs. The frontal connection provides for the upward rotation with respect to the shelf, from a fore-and-aft panel-position which provides the sorting bins to move to an upraised position in which the panels are freed from the sorted mail batches so that the full set of sorted mail batches may be bundled as a group of code sets. An array of such shelf-and-panel modules are releasably retained on a large rack, by which the individual modules may be positioned and removed. The various features provide a sorting station installation particularly beneficial to that of a U.S. Post Office facility, although the concepts are not limited to that type of use.

    摘要： A portable mail delivery tray (10) retains a sorted bundle of mail for quick identification and delivery by a mail carrier from his motor vehicle. The mail delivery tray (10) includes a platform (18) and upwardly extending rear support (20) for supporting a substantially planar inclined support member (22) extending to a front wall (24) extending upwardly from the platform (18). The front wall (24) and a transverse side wall (28) are provided for restraining and aligning the sorted bundle of mail placed upon the support member (22). An elastic member (30) extends from the rear support (20) over the top of the bundle of mail to the front wall (34) for restraining movement of the mail during transit. A receiving station (40) is attached to the transverse side wall (28) for providing a number of compartments for organizing currency and postal items sold by the mail carrier.
