A coil spring forming system allows for forming reduced diameter ends at both ends of a coil spring in a single forming process. A rotating member supports one end of the coil spring and preferably includes a die portion that establishes a configuration of that end of the coil spring. A pitch controlling device guides the coil stock longitudinally along the axis of the spring as the rotating member rotates to establish the desired pitch of the coil spring. A moving mandrel member is guided along an axis of the coil spring so that the mandrel member and the pitch controlling member establish the desired diameter of the spring at the corresponding portion of the spring. The mandrel member preferably has a forming surface with a varying outside dimension so that, depending on the placement of the mandrel relative to the coil stock and the pitch controlling member, the diameter of the resulting coil spring can be varied along the length of the spring. A controller preferably coordinates movements of the rotating member, the pitch controlling member and the mandrel member to establish the desired coil spring configuration in a single forming process.

In a cold coil forming process, a pitch control tool is moved in synchronism with the displacement of the outer diameter control roller so as to form a coil spring having a straight and oblique axial line, and, at the same time, maintain a pitch of the coil wire substantially constant substantially over an entire length thereof. Thus, the method of the present invention can be implemented by using a conventional coiling machine only if the outer diameter control roller and the pitch control tool can be adjusted as required by the present invention. In particular, the pitch of the coil spring can be kept constant over each turn of the coil wire without regard to the variation in the radius of curvature of the coil spring.

The present invention is directed to a method for producing a helical spring which comprises the steps of providing a plurality of parameters for defining a desired configuration of a target helical spring, setting at least bending positions and twisting positions on the basis of the plurality of parameters, and bending and twisting the element wire at the positions set in response to every predetermined feeding amount of the element wire, to produce the target helical spring. The parameters includes number of coils, coil diameter and lead of the target helical spring. At least the bending positions may be adjusted in response to the cycle of alternating diameters between a local maximum diameter and a local minimum diameter of the target helical spring.

The present invention is directed to an inclined helical spring having a plurality of coils along an inclined coil axis. Each coil constituting a part or the whole length of the helical compression spring is increased and decreased in diameter along the longitudinal axis of the spring, and forming the longitudinal axis of the spring in a free state thereof to be inclined substantially at a predetermined angle to an axis to be mounted with the spring. For example, one section of each coil having approximately a half of the circumference of each coil, which is divided by a plane including the coil axis, is increased in diameter, whereas the other one section of approximately a half of the circumference of each coil is decreased in diameter. The inclined helical spring may be mounted on a vehicle suspension.

A coil former allows transposition between layers of turns in a coil to be accomplished without damage. The transpositions can be made in a short side of the coil. The former has finned portions which guide the wire into the correct locations during winding. When the coil is wound, the former is disassembled and the end portions are pulled towards the center of the former and turned through 90null to be removed. A method of using the former is described.
