The present invention provides a die forged stud link chain which comprises substantially .theta.-shaped complete stud links (1) (FIG. 2) formed by means of die forging and substantially .epsilon.- shaped semi-finished stud links (2) (FIG. 3) feasible to be formed into a exceeding 45.degree.. The stud link chain can be produced mainly by using a die forging process and a minimum welding process, so that a decrease in the shearing stress applied to the shoulder part due to bending can be avoided. Further, steel materials superior in decrease of the shearing stress and in the tensile strength can be employed. The resulting stud link chain is lightweight and superior in resistance to fatigue failure.

In accordance with the invention the cutting to length is followed by a conveying step transversely to a feed direction, both conveying steps are carried out transversely to a direction of action during the cutting to length, preliminary and finish bending (closing), the section of flat wire is held down for the preliminary bending and for the closing, the particular closed individual link is pushed into the extraction section to adjust the first transverse web in the assembly plane, and the striking is superimposed on the extraction of the chain.

A method for the consecutive resistance heating of sequentially advanced wire pins by means of electrodes positioned on end faces of the pins includes the following steps:A. connecting in series at least two wire pins to a current source through the electrodes;B. passing heating current through each wire pin for a number of consecutive heating periods which equal the number of the serially-connected wire pins; andC. between each heating period removing that wire pin which has been exposed to all consecutive heating periods and, in its stead, introducing a new wire pin.

For the successive welding of the joints of consecutive links forming a link chain, the chain is advanced in a chain welding machine to bring a link to be welded directly below a welding position; the two links flanking the link to be welded are aligned in a common plane of alignment while a tensioning force is applied to the chain parallel to the direction of chain advance. Thereafter, the link to be welded is raised into a welding position in a plane disposed at 90.degree. to the plane of alignment. Subsequently, the link is immobilized in the welding position and its joint is welded. Upon completion of the welding step, the just-welded link is lowered from the welding position.

For providing an improved deformability of wire blanks (such as chain link blanks) during noncutting shaping, there is performed a bevelling step on the wire blank simultaneously from two opposite sides in the same blank zone, while leaving unaffected a flat cross-sectional portion adjacent the blank axis. This bevelling step is subsequently repeated at least once in the same zone in a direction set off not more than 90* with respect to the bevelling direction of the first bevelling step.
