An arrangement for connecting an elongated stopper rod made of a refractory material for a metallurgical vessel to a lifting device for the stopper rod is provided. The arrangement includes a stopper rod having an upper front side and an internal longitudinal recess extending therefrom, a support having one end for engaging the lifting device an another end for engaging the stopper rod in the internal longitudinal recess. The stopper rod includes a housing that laterally widens a portion of the longitudinal recess, the housing having an upper boundary surface transverse to the longitudinal axis of the stopper rod and having side walls that taper from the upper boundary surface into the longitudinal recess. The support has at least one transverse opening in which blocking element is displaced across the longitudinal axis of the support so that the blocking element is releasably retained entirely within the cross section of the support during insertion of the support within the stopper rod in an insertion position and extends from the cross section and engages behind the upper boundary surface in a locked position. A releasable stop is provided on the support and upper front side of the stopper rod. The support can be easily and non-destructibly removed from the stopper rod and, when the stopper rod becomes worn, a new stopper rod can be mounted on the same support.

In order to prevent any manual operation of a control lever for the stopper, a lifting rod for the stopper is disposed in a module box together with a vertical guide and a computer-controlled electromechanical drive for the lifting rod. The module box is exchangeably fastened to the casting vessel by clamping elements. Before casting begins, a drive motor for the stopper (13) is to be connected by means of electric plug-and-socket connections to a control cabinet. From the start of casting, the stopper movement is controllable exclusively by means of the electric drive.

The instant invention is directed to a stopper rod spatial control mechanism for use in combination with a bottom discharge holding reservoir for molten metal having a nozzle. The mechanism comprises a base, an outer tube and an inner tube. The outer tube has a longitudinal axis which is perpendicular to the base. The outer tube is swingably mounted about an axis parallel to and spaced away from the longitudinal axis. The inner tube is telescopically mounted within the outer tube. The inner tube is reciprocally movable along the longitudinal axis and is rotatable about the longitudinal axis. A servomotor is mounted at a lower end of the outer tube. A ball screw is connected to and rotated by the motor. A ball nut is affixed to the inner tube and cooperates with the ball screw. A boom having a first end and a second end is affixed to the inner tube adjacent its first end and rotates with the inner tube about the longitudinal axis. A stopper rod depends from the second end of the boom. A brake is affixed to the base and cooperates with the boom. The stopper rod is aligned with the nozzle by the combined movements of rotating the inner tube about the longitudinal axis and swinging the outer tube about the axis parallel to said longitudinal axis. Once the stopper rod is aligned, the position of the stopper rod is fixed by the brake. Thereafter, reciprocal movement of the stopper rod above the nozzle is controlled by the actuation of the servomotor.

Thus, when a crane initially exerts lifting force on the bail to lift the stopper rod out of the ladle, the stopper rod is automatically released from the gooseneck on the ladle.
