When the external force is applied, the striker (4) is pressed, the pedal bracket (1) is deformed on the basis of a weakened portion (16) together therewith, and a master cylinder (7) moves to a position apart from a knee (31), whereby an interference between both elements can be avoided. As a result, in the case that the external force is applied to a front surface of the cab, it is possible to prevent the knee (31) of a driver from interfering with a clutch master vac mounting portion (24) and a brake master vac mounting portion (25) and it is possible to improve a safety of the driver.

A structure absorbs impact energy in an upper vehicle body portion provided with a vehicle body structural member and an interior trim spaced inward from the structural member. The structure includes an energy absorbing member disposed in the interval between the structural member and the interior trim and extending along the structural member in a lengthwise direction of the structural member, and a spacer substantially filling a gap formed between the energy absorbing member and the interior trim. The energy absorbing member is formed so that a section thereof taken on an imaginary plane perpendicular to the lengthwise direction has a substantially uniform shape along the lengthwise direction. The energy absorbing member may be an extended pipe or a hybrid pipe including a core member formed from a metal foil, and sheets of a different material laminated on opposite surfaces of the core member. The hybrid pipe may be twisted about its longitudinal axis, and/or a shape of a cross section of the hybrid pipe may gradually change in a direction of the longitudinal axis.

The present invention comprises a column support fixed to a deck cross member extending along a width of a vehicle; a steering column supported by the column support; a column bracket disposed about an axis of the steering column in such a manner as to widen toward a front part of the vehicle, both ends of the column bracket being fixed to a body of the vehicle; and knee absorbers disposed at both sides of the column bracket, each of the knee absorbers having a base end fixed to the deck cross member and a front end facing the knees of an occupant, the front end coming into contact with the knees of the occupant. When the vehicle crashes, the occupant and his or her knees move forward to collide with the column bracket. The column bracket, however, is not displaced since both ends of the column bracket are fixed to the body of the vehicle. The knees of the occupant are guided forward along the surface of the column bracket to the right and left knee absorbers. This prevents the deformation of the steering column, and prevents the disturbance of the contracting function of a steering system for absorbing the impact energy. Moreover, the knee absorbers buckle and deform when the knees collide with them, and this results in the absorption of the impact energy to reduce the load that is applied to the knees. It is therefore possible to protect the knees of the occupant.

A safety device for an airbag-system which has not been triggered by an accident, comprising a fabric which is suitable for surrounding a steering wheel of a motorcar which is provided with the airbag-system. The fabric is suitable for tightening at the side of the steering column on which the steering wheel is mounted, such that if the airbag-system is activated during a rescue operation, inflation of the airbag is hindered by the fabric.
