A retaining wall system comprised of units having a front planter compartment with a drainage channel, and a rear hydro-drainage compartment. The front planter compartment accepts soil and vegetation therein, and the drainage channel drains water and other fluids from the first compartment into the second compartment to prevent hydrostatic pressure from building up within the front compartment. The rear hydro-drainage compartment is open on its bottom for draining and may be filled with angular gravel or other hydro-drainage aggregate to properly weight units to maintain unit placement. The units contain angle of installation guides that aid in vertically aligning the units to achieve a desired face setback, and angularly aligning the units to achieve a desired angle of repose between layers of units. The units contain horizontal alignment guides to aid in side-to-side unit placement. The units are of a sufficient weight that the unit weight along with the angle of installation guides and horizontal guides reduces unit slippage without the use of interlocking means or mortar. A wall of up to eight feet may be built without the use of geogrid in accordance with the present invention.

A unidirectional geotextile fabric for use in reinforcement of earthen retaining walls, embankments, slopes and related structures. The fabric is an open grid of high modulus of elasticity strands extending in the weft direction and strands of comparatively lower modulus of elasticity material extending in the warp direction. The fabric is preferably coated with a curable resinous material of sufficient thickness to protect the glass strands from breaking as the fabric is rolled onto cores and unrolled at the job site. When laying the fabric, a roll of the fabric is placed at one end of the face of the earthen structure being constructed and simply unrolled in a direction generally parallel to the structure's face. Because the high modulus strands of the fabric are the weft strands they extend and inhibit soil movement in a direction substantially perpendicular to the face of the structure.

An opening in a fabric geotextile tube is closed by clamping a backing member and friction enhancer on the inside of the geotextile tube to a friction enhancer and support on the outside of the geotextile tube. The friction enhancers reduce slippage between the fabric and the backing member on the inside of the tube and between the fabric and the support on the outside of the tube. The backing member is larger than the opening. In one embodiment, the backing member is inserted into the opening by providing a slit ring backing member, inserting the fabric through the slit and then rotating the ring and advancing the ring into the geotextile tube. In another embodiment, the backing member is inserted through the opening in segments. In another embodiment, an inlet assembly is provided by the support. In another embodiment of the invention, a connection is made to the geotextile tube for securing a UV protective cover to the geotextile tube. In another embodiment of the invention, a more elaborate friction enhancer is provided.

An improved method and apparatus for constructing a soil reinforced earthen retaining wall wherein successive soil reinforcing mats embedded within an earthen formation have bent-up face elements which are slidably engaged to enable the earthen formation to settle without bulging the face elements. Backing mats are disposed behind the face elements for movement relative thereto in generally vertical planes. The backing mats serve to support the successive soil reinforcing mats and permit the mats to more toward one another to accommodate settling of the formation without bulging of the face elements.

The U-shaped panels are vertically piled and further include a vertical engagement means to engage with the plurality of said vertically piled U-shaped panels, and connection members to connect to the I-shaped panels. This vertical engagement means includes an upper hole formed in the top surface of a lower panel of the vertically piled U-shaped panels and a lower hole formed in the bottom surface of an upper panel of the vertically piled U-shaped panels, and a steel bar installed in the upper and lower holes. Concrete is filled into each of the cavity defined between the horizontally adjacent panels, and crushed stones are packed into the inner space defined by said U-shaped panels and two I-shape panels.
