A post assembly and method of capping a post, especially useful for pilings, e.g., as used for docks and the like. A covering over a post end is comprised of a semi-rigid, energy-absorptive, predominantly closed-cell body of foamed synthetic resin with a smooth continuous covering adhered thereto. In a preferred embodiment the covering is a thermoformed cap of predetermined size and shape, cushioned and adhered to the post by the foamed resin, and resistant to abrasion, impact, and ultraviolet deterioration. The foamed resin fills and seals all voids in the end of the post to prevent moisture from entering and deteriorating the post, and cushions and supports the cap to inhibit cracking or puncturing of the cap from impacts in use. The shape of the cap may be selected to provide a convex contour, as for pilings in coastal areas to prevent roosting of birds, and may bear indicia or be of various colors.

This disclosure teaches a connector for use in a method for replacing an existing utility pole (usually wood), without disturbing hardware mounted thereon. As taught in U.S. Pat. No. 3,911,548, the utility pole includes a proximal section having a bottom end attached to the earth and a distal section having hardware mounted thereon. A new pole section (preferably of prestressed concrete) is attached to the earth and has the connector mounted thereon. The distal section (with its hardware intact thereon) is severed from the proximal section. The distal section is then connected to project from the new pole section by inserting and securing the distal section in the connector. The connector includes an annular sleeve engageable about the outside of the new pole section. The sleeve projects beyond the new pole section and has push plates positioned within the sleeve to embrace the distal section to hold it socketed therein. The push plates are engaged by means of bolts anchored in the sleeve. A suitable sealant, such as grout, is also employed.

A breakaway post is provided for supporting highway signs or the like. The post is made from independent flat rectangular segments arranged end to end to form three panels, with the segments secured together along their side edges to form a hollow post having a triangular cross section. A plurality of breakaway lines to start the breakup of the post upon impact by an automobile or the like are provided by the ends of the segments. The ends of the segments of any one panel are staggered longitudinally with respect to the ends of the segments of the other panels except at the top and bottom of the post. Staggering of the ends of the segments results in a post having sufficient strength to withstand wind loading even when signs are attached to the post.
