A method and a structure for stabilizing a formation of natural substrate having a substantially vertical face. A tendon is inserted into a hole in the formation. A heading device includes a plate, a tube, an adhesive material within the tube, and an anchor. The plate has a bore disposed over a protruding portion of the tendon. The tube is disposed over the protruding portion of the plate. An adhesive material is disposed within the tube to couple the tendon to the tube. The anchor is coupled to the plate. A final concrete facing is placed over the entire heading device embedding the anchor.

A resin nozzle positioner for a rock bolter, having a frame supporting feed tracks traversed by a drill and a bolt driver, has a resin nozzle that guides a resin sausage into a hole drilled along a work axis. A positioner base is fixed to the frame and two arms are pivotably connected to the positioner base and to a nozzle block, to which the resin nozzle is mounted. The arms remain parallel and move such that the resin nozzle remains parallel to the work axis while moving along an arc between a retracted position, where the resin nozzle is spaced apart from the work axis, and an extended position, where the resin nozzle is aligned with the work axis. An actuator operably connected to two elements selected from the arms, the positioner base, and the nozzle block serves to move the resin nozzle.

A mortar composition, curable by frontal polymerization after heat initiation, is described, wherein are contained a) at least one polymerizable monomer and/or at least one curable resin, b) at least one polymerization initiator, which can be activated and/or released thermally at a temperature above 30° C., for the polymerizable monomers and/or curing accelerator for the curable resin and c) optionally at least one filler, the nature and amount of polymerizable monomer or curable resin and polymerization initiator or curing accelerator being selected so that a polymerization front velocity of at least 10 cm/min results after the polymerization is initiated, as well as a method for fastening tie bars, reinforcing steel or the like in solid substrates.

A method of applying a chemical anchoring adhesive to the interior of a borehole includes the steps of providing a highly viscous, self-contained slug of chemical anchoring adhesive, inserting the slug into the borehole, providing an anchor pin, and driving the anchor pin into the borehole using a driving tool that imparts rotary motion to the anchor pin. The adhesive slug includes a first part having a first color and including a resin, and a second part having a second color different from the first and including a curing agent. The rotary motion of the anchor pin mixes the first and second parts together to form a substantially homogeneous composition having a third color different from the first and second colors. The visual indication provided by the third color notifies the worker when the mixing is complete, saving time and money at the construction site while minimizing the occurrence of defective or insufficient mixing.

An expansion shell assembly for mine roof bolts includes an expansion member threaded onto an associated mine roof bolt. A support device is annularly disposed around the associated roof bolt. An expansion shell is annularly disposed around the associated roof bolt between the expansion member and the support device. The expansion shell has a base ring for engaging the support device and fingers for engaging a peripheral edge of the tapered plug. The engagement between the base ring and the support device permits axial traverse movement of the support device relative to the expansion shell for tensioning the roof bolt.

Apparatus, method, and a kit for a yieldable tendon mine support rock anchor include structure and/or steps including the provision of a metal support member having an outside diameter which is less than a diameter of the rock hole. Preferably, resin cartridges are disposed inside the rock hole. A wedge anchor is provided and is disposed at a distal end of the metal support member and has a narrow portion disposed uphole from a wider base portion thereof. The wedge anchor base portion is narrower than the diameter of the rock hole to permit un-solidified resin to pass from downhole to uphole of the wedge anchor base portion. The wedge anchor is dimensioned to crush solidified uphole resin and permit downhole movement of the crushed solidified resin when a yielding tension is applied to the metal support member and the wedge anchor moves uphole. A resin mixer is disposed at a distal end of the wedge anchor and preferably has a first edge for penetrating the resin cartridge and a second edge for mixing the resin.

A helical wedge tie, anywhere from 2½ inches to 4 inches in length, (which is approximately the width of a standard brick), can be utilized to wedgingly engage the mortar in a wall after a helical main tie has been passed all the way through the mortar and secured in the concrete. The wedge tie may have the same helical pitch as that of the main tie, or it may be a pitch somewhat tighter or shorter to not only fill the space between the host tie and the mortar, but wedgingly engage the same. The auxiliary wedge pin may be pointed at both ends, pointed at one end, or even blunt at both ends. Successful fixes have been made where one end is sheared, and has a relatively chisel-like end. The method of the invention is directed to the reinforcing of a tie in a wall reinforcing environment, where the outer portion of the tie passes through a softer material, and a subsequent reinforcement of the tie portion in the soft material becomes desirable.
