Abstract: A reciprocating pump or compressor has a piston head assembly in a cylinder having an inside surface. The piston head assembly has a piston hub and a piston seal. The piston hub has a flange. A piston seal formed of a first and a second resilient material, the second resilient material having a hardness less than the hardness of the first resilient material, is mounted on the piston hub. The first resilient material abuts the flange and covers an outer surface of the flange. The second resilient material is bonded to the first resilient material. The piston seal has an annular bulge in the second resilient material with a maximum diameter interior to the annular bulge larger than the diameter of the inside surface of the cylinder, forming a seal with the cylinder when compressed upon insertion of the piston head assembly into the cylinder.

Abstract: Within a piston cylinder of a pneumatic engine, the system includes a piston proportioned for complemental travel within a piston cylinder, the piston having a radial compression surface and elements for effecting the axial reciprocation of the piston within the piston housing. The system further includes a piston seal including an element for securement to the compression surface of the piston and an integrally dependent resilient annular skirt normally biased inwardly toward a longitudinal system axis, the skirt, in combination with the securement elements, defining a radius of less than that from the system axis to interior walls of the cylinder during low pressure (return stroke) phases of a work cycle of the pneumatic engine and, during high pressure/compression stroke phases, defining a radius greater than that from the system axis to the inner wall of the cylinder. The inward bias of the skirt is overcome causing axial and radial lifting of the skirt against inner walls of the cylinder to effect a piston seal of a high integrity during high pressure phases of the engine work cycle. No seal exists during low pressure phases, since the skirt is not yet expanded.

Abstract: A piston and piston ring assembly has a compression ring and a lubrication control ring. The compression ring substantially seals a combustion chamber from a crankcase chamber. The lubrication control ring is configured with a reverse-taper end surface and a wiping edge. The reverse-taper end surface allows the lubrication control ring to leave a thin lubricant coat on a cylinder wall during a piston downstroke. The wiping edge pulls lubricant upward toward the compression ring during a piston upstroke. The combination of the elements and the elements on their own result in enhanced lubrication of the compression ring and thereby increase the life of the piston ring and reduce the wear on the ring and the cylinder bore.

Abstract: A seal for a piston in a circulating piston device such as a motor has a number of rearwardly angled vanes. The piston circulates in an annular passage. The vanes bear against walls of the passage. In one embodiment the vanes are pivotally mounted to a piston and have centers of mass which are located so that centrifugal forces on the vanes, which result from the circulation of the piston, help to bias the vanes against walls of the passage. Abstract: A seal assembly for a groove or seal gland in a relatively displaceable machine part for sealing an axial machine part extending therethrough comprises a pair of annular seal elements and a support element disposed between the annular elements and radially extending wall of said groove.
