A retainer segment is provided for a swirler assembly having first and second members, such as a primary and secondary swirler or a swirler body and floating ferrule, disposed in sliding engagement with each other. The two members are maintained in sliding engagement by two of the retainer segments which are joined to the second member and engage the first member. Each retainer segment is an arcuate member defining inner and outer curved edges and first and second ends. Each end has a concave cutout formed therein to reduce weld joint and bending stresses that occur from the forced vibration of the retainer segments.

Assembly of the combustor dome in a gas turbine engine is facilitated by providing a self-fixturing configuration. The combustor dome assembly is made up of a dome plate having a plurality of swirler assemblies mounted therein. Each swirler assembly is provided with a locating pin that extends between the dome plate and the swirler assembly for positioning the swirler assembly with respect to the dome plate without the use of fixturing tools. Preferably, the swirler assembly includes a swirl cup and an outlet sleeve mounted in the dome plate. The locating pin is pressed into a hole formed in the swirl cup. One end of the pin is received in a slot formed in the dome plate, and the other end of the pin is received in a slot formed in the outlet sleeve. Thus, the locating pin sets the circumferential orientation of the swirler assembly in relation to the dome plate. A shoulder on the swirl cup sets the cup axially with respect to the dome plate, and a shoulder on the outlet sleeve sets the sleeve axially with respect to the swirl cup.

A method of combusting fuel in the combustor of a gas turbine engine is disclosed which includes injecting fuel and a first predetermined amount of airflow into the combustion chamber to form a fuel-rich, highly mixed, uniform distribution fuel-air spray pattern flowing downstream in the combustion chamber and introducing a second predetermined amount of airflow into the fuel air spray pattern from combustor air inlets positioned at a first predetermined distance downstream from the combustor dome with the first predetermined distance being greater than 0.75 times the dome height and said second predetermined amount of airflow being sufficient to cause rapid mixing and quenching of the rich fuel-air mixture to a lean fuel-air mixture. A combustor for a gas turbine engine is also disclosed which includes sidewalls and a dome wall to form a combustion chamber, a fuel injector/air swirler assembly for injecting a fuel air spray, a first and second array of air inlets for introducing airflow into the combustion chamber sufficient to cause rapid combustion and rapidly resulting lean-fuel air mixture, the first array being positioned a predetermined distance downstream from the dome wall with the predetermined distance being greater than 0.75 times the dome height and the second array of air inlets being positioned downstream from the first array.

A pre-mixture forming swirler in a gas turbine pre-mixed flame type low NOx combustor is improved so as to accelerate mixing of fuel and air and to prevent the occurrence of flame stagnation and burning of components. In particular, a three-dimensional swirler is constructed such that each swirler vane is twisted from a hub side thereof to a tip side so that a fitting angle of the tip side relative to a center axis of a fuel nozzle is larger than an angle of the hub side. Thereby, while the angle of the hub side is set smaller so that flame stagnation and burning of components resulted therefrom may be prevented from occurring, the angle of the tip side may be selected so that the shearing flow necessary for appropriate mixing of fuel and air is obtained. Thus, favorable pre-mixing is achieved, life deterioration due to burning, etc., is prevented and combustion efficiency is enhanced.

A burner for use in a combustion system of a heavy-duty industrial gas turbine includes a fuel/air premixer having an air inlet, a fuel inlet, and an annular mixing passage. The fuel/air premixer mixes fuel and air into a uniform mixture for injection into a combustor reaction zone. The burner also includes an inlet flow conditioner disposed at the air inlet of the fuel/air premixer for controlling a radial and circumferential distribution of incoming air. The pattern of perforations in the inlet flow conditioner is designed such that a uniform air flow distribution is produced at the swirler inlet annulus in both the radial and circumference directions. The premixer includes a swozzle assembly having a series of preferably air foil shaped turning vanes that impart swirl to the airflow entering via the inlet flow conditioner. Each air foil contains internal fuel flow passages that introduce natural gas fuel into the air stream via fuel metering holes that pass through the walls of the air foil shaped turning vanes. By injecting fuel in this manner, an aerodynamically clean flow field is maintained throughout the premixer. By injecting fuel via two separate passages, the fuel/air mixture strength distribution can be controlled in the radial direction to obtain optimum radial concentration profiles for control of emissions, lean blow outs, and combustion driven dynamic pressure activity as machine and combustor load are varied.

A mechanical lock detachably connects the plug and the pin with one another, and the mechanical lock may include cooperating threads or other appropriate structures. The swirler is removed from the basket frame by detaching the plug from the basket frame, disconnecting the plug from the pin, and sliding the swirler longitudinally along its own axis whereby the pin clears the mounting hole within which the plug was mounted.

A gas-fuelled burner, especially for gas turbines powered by low calorific value fuel, is provided with restrictors to slow the incoming fuel from inlets to a similar mass mean velocity as the air provided through inlets, thereby reducing turbulence and improving combustion. The restrictors and outlet passages carrying the fuel to the combustion pre-chamber are located in vanes of a radial inlet swirler so as to alternate with the air inlets. The geometry is such that the respective flows emerge tangentially to a notional circle centered on the combustion pre-chamber of the turbine. The circle is preferably between 0.7 and 1.0 times the diameter of the actual pre-chamber. The ratio of the area of the restrictor to that of the outlet passage may lie between 1:1.1 and 1:1.7, preferably 1:1.4.
